I am sorry if I am not using the correct lingo btw, this is all a bit of a mystery to me

  1. How do I get my designs from paper onto the embroidery fabric? Is there a special embroiderers carbon paper or something?
  1. Is there a better (ie cheaper) place to buy embroidery floss than sainsburys?
  1. htf do I do a french knot? (having now worked out it is an actual stitch not a euphemism)
  1. What else do I need to know to start?

fwiw I am kind of teaching the kids as I go-we all have embroidery hoops (thanks to the PDSA!) and hessian and bodkins and thus far it is going well...

I do kind of still feel like a knitter dabbling in forbidden climes though...

ok. . . .

  1. you can get a transfer pencil - draw your design - reverse it - draw over it with pencil then iron paper onto fabric.
  1. eBay - charity shops - i buy mine here
  1. i know this in theory but i can't do them
  1. get a book of embroidery stitches from same places as floss!!

HTH

French knots

Bring your floss through the fabric and then wrap the floss around the needle. The more times you wrap it the bigger the knot. 2 or 3 times is usually what you find.
Then take it though the fabric again.

Does that make sense?

This might help
The video clips are particularly good.
