Need a new sewing machine

My brother 5010, after almost 25 years of use, has decided to snap apart when asked once too often to tackle attaching a thick strap to a bag....

I am currently based in Brussels, and apart from Kreffel and Media Markt for general electrical goods, don't know where else to go.

I mainly do small craft things like tote bags or room organising baskets or cushion covers. So a mix of cotton, sometimes thicker furnishing fabrics, sometimes interlining, zips, cordage etc. I want to do quilting and dressmaking. I don't think I want specialist machine embroidery etc but I liked having some fancy stitches and a proper buttonhole function.

My mum had a singer for over 40 years, my gran had a singer over 40 years, my brother was mostly great until it snapped but I had problems getting the tension right at times.

I work FT so the machine is for hobby time rather than professional or semi-professional levels of use.

What should I look for, look out for to avoid, and what are good makes/models these days as quality of so many brands has changed?

And does anyone know a good place in Brussels to go looking? (I don't have a car but very happy to go anywhere on public transport).

I'm UK based but would suggest a full metal body machine - likely older - Singer, Jones, etc.
There's a reason these machines still work!

FB marketplace? eBay?
