Can you recommend a book on the names of colours?!

I would like an up-to-date book that lists the names of as many colours as possible, obviously with swatches of the colours.

If I want to describe a particular shade of pink, for example, it would be great to know what term to use.

I have The Colour Bible by Laura Perryman and Werner's Nomenclature of Colours, but there are loads of frequently used colours that are not in either of these books, and the colours in the Werner's book are of course faded.

Does a standardized list of colour names even exist?! I'm finding that colour names are used to mean different things, e.g. in Werner's book, Verditter blue is a bright, greenish blue - a vivid turquoise - but this paint company describes it as "true blue".

No, there is no standardisation of colour names. One person's 'violet' is not the same as another's. Even if you buy a book that list lots of colour names, it's meaningless really, because they are not standardised - it will just be the version of the colour in that book.

That's why we have the Pantone system and also things like the Munsell colour system.

Thanks for your reply! Forgive my ignorance, but is there a book that lists the Pantone or Munsell colours?! Because looking at colours on screen is unreliable.

Yes there is a Pantone book or catalog- Google it it's on their website. Or pick up a swatch book (they might sell it but it will be pricey).
But it's not universal - Pantone 393 might be a deep blue (I have no idea if it is) but unless every seller out there used Pantone colours it's not helpful.
