Dress making material - where to go in London to buy this?

I want to have a go at dress making but there isn't much choice of fabrics locally. I am thinking that London must be a better place to shop for dress making fabrics...can anyone give me any tips?

Thanks

John Lewis on Oxford St

or Berwick St in Soho, esp if you want silk or party-dress type stuff

I second Berwick street, there's a couple of places in Notting hill and Walthamstow has a wealth of fabric shops.

GREAT!
Why Walthamstow I wonder?

Second John Lewis But this place is also worth a look Mcculloch and Wallis
It is just around the corner from the JL london store it has lovely ribbons and haberdashery stuff. Lots of stairs though so not buggy friendly

Ah, another great mner gave me this tip and there are indeed lots of fabric shops there. If you carry on right past Sainsburys there a couple of shops that sell dirt cheap (£1 a metre stuff) that is fabulous if your starting out and want to make something but don't want to ruin expensive fabric.
Back down towards the station there is a place with more expensive and nicer fabric which is great for when you're a little more confident about what you're doing.

oh you lot are FABULOUS!

I second Joel and Sons, near Edgeware Rd. Church Street Market i think. It's to die for. Got great stuff for my wedding there too

Tooting also has lots of fabric shops, if South is easier than north. John Lewis Oxford Street is good for finding things but you might have to order it if you want quite a bit of something specific

John Lewis on Oxford St absolute pants these days for dress fabric - it's been reduced to one tiny corner, I couldn't even find any gingham the day I went (except in yellow - eurgh). Stick to cheap and cheerful markets instead.

Walthamstow has many many cheap fabric shops (I bought some jersey last week at 40p a metre!) They used to only stock Indian fabrics but now many of them do everything

and I second comments about John Lewis.. very expensive and very little choice
