Reed Diffusers

Does anyone make their own Reed diffusers? I have a ton of essential oils and I hate the cloying smell of most shop bought diffusers.

Hopeful bump!

I have made my own, reusing ones that have run out. I can't remember where I saw/read this tip but using baby oil as the base for the essential oil - I use pure lavender oil as that's my scent preference - is the way to go. I haven't made any using anything else so can't say I have anything to compare it to, but it seems to work ok and I generally then just need ti top up the lavender oil once the scent disappears.

I didn't think of baby oil!

Yeah, it wasn't something I'd thought about until I read it somewhere. I'd assumed the base would have been more water based. I went and had a sniff of the one that I last refilled months ago, after I replied, and was surprised to find it smelt of lavender still. Although not really in a place where I'd have noticed it otherwise, as had forgotten all about it until then!

Augeo is the best base to use for reed diffusers or another good base is formulators alcohol . The scent throw depends on the reeds though. Good quality fibre reeds are better than natural reeds.

That's interesting, I've not heard of augeo (I shall have to Google), and so have only made with a baby oil oil base so far. Absolutely agree with needing good reeds. So far I've tended to only re-use the reeds from what seemed to be the more effective diffusers I already have. I currently have one in the kitchen, which I made as I mentioned above, and when I go to turn the reeds upside down (I find this can 're-start' the scent when it becomes less noticeable) I can then notice the smell again, but over (decent amount of) time even my home made ones lose their scent, so I'm also quite interested to try one in the way you have described.

@Sugarplumfairy65 so have had a very quick google and this one seems to sum it up succinctly enough. I think I'm going to get some of this when my current one loses its scent and then compare. I know you were actually directing your reply to @BastardtheCat but thanks anyway!

Sorry, this was supposed to be attached to my post!

Try scent perfique for fibre reeds. They are really good quality, as are their oils.
When it comes to fragrance oils, you really do "get what you pay for".
The augeo clean multi is perfect.

Thanks @Sugarplumfairy65, I'm ok with my essential oils, but think will give the augeo a try the next time I make one and see how it compares re scent. Same as reeds perhaps, I think they probably need replacing more often than I have done so will look in to those as well.
