Knitting pattern help!

Am hoping some wise mumsnetters can help with this. I'm working with a pattern chart (which I hate!). Would you start each row reading the pattern L to R, or would you alternate; so odd rows L to R and even rows R to L? I've got myself completely confused so any help would be great. Thank you!

Start at bottom right hand corner and read rows in alternate directions. Don't forget that on your wrong side rows, knit and purl are reversed.

MyFlagMeansIceCream · 19/02/2023 20:43

So row 1, which is a right side row, is the bottom row of the chart read from
right to left. Row 2 is a wrong side row, read from left to right

It's got cables on both odd and even rows?

Oh goodness. You are a masochist.

Thanks @MyFlagMeansIceCream I'll do that. And yes the pattern has cables on odd and even rows.....I'm inclined to think that's an error and move the left hand ones up a row. I've had a check online and cant see any corrections for the pattern so who knows. And yes @purpledalmation I'm thoroughly regretting this now!

I have seen it where you chart is right side rows only. The wrong side rows you just knit "in pattern" so to speak, so row two would be a non cabled version of row 1, with the knit and purl reversed obvs.

Does it look likely that your piece of knitting should be twice the length of the chart?

DanaScully53 · 20/02/2023 08:16

The pictures not very clear on my phone but once I realised it was the wrong way round (duh me) I can't actually see any cables on the wrong side. Just start bottom right. Right to left odd rows, left to right even rows.

Looks a really nice pattern. Be sure to keep us updated on your progress.

Thighdentitycrisis · 20/02/2023 09:14

And if you are on circulars every row is right side I think

TrashyPanda · 20/02/2023 09:18

I think the cables are on the right side only, if you turn the chart around and read it longways.

MyFlagMeansIceCream · 20/02/2023 18:34

At the left hand end it looks like row 2 has a cable, but if you move it up to row 3, it matches the one along to the right hand end. I suspect typo possible, as you said. Enjoy it!

I thought that too! I cannot for the life of me read a knitting or crochet chart, I need every row written out and I still struggle !
Please do post a photo, I cannot imagine how this actually looks 🙄😊

nothernexposure · 20/02/2023 19:31

Thanks everyone. I've been painstakingly writing the rows out as it's a 24 row repeating pattern. I've run into more problems so I've ended up emailing the publishers to check if the chart is correct. I might eventually finish it by 2029....

It looks like it’s a 12 row repeat.

the chart shows more rows than that, but they are the same.

the chart looks more complex than it actually is, because it is showing repeats and the back/front/sleeves all in one chart.

if you have squared paper, you could copy out a single repeat for each separate element.
