The other thread is so painfully slow so lets hope a shiny new one will run a smoothly as a well behaved sewing machine. Pin your places here my lovely stitchers Smile

@0o0o0o0 it was fine until I took the cover off to fix the bobbin winder. Then, when I put it back together I found that the shank is just in the wrong place. I've taken it apart again looking for the issue but I really can't see why it's suddenly wrong, let alone how to fix it.
I'm fairly technically minded but it's stumped me, and I have to get stuff sewn by Thursday.

dubyalass · 26/02/2023 07:56

Have you put the metal plate back on the right way round? Possibly a stupid question but thought I'd ask!

InMySpareTime · 26/02/2023 08:09

Yes, I'll post a photo later

InMySpareTime · 26/02/2023 08:26

The curved line on the foot should line up with the curved line on the plate, but it just doesn't.

How annoying!

@CrimsonAlligator It’s the Free Range Slacks by Sew House Seven.

I am almost finished making a version using an old bed sheet and there does seem to be a tightness, if not a pull, across the tummy area, which I assume will transfer to the real version as they will also be cotton. I live in jeggings so this more tailored fit is new to me.

I did the 16 so that would be 20 UK size, whereas I wear 16-18 bottoms depending on brand.

I would be concerned going any bigger as the legs are already quite wide and there’s going to be plenty of room in the waist, however I did have to shimmy into them a little, to get them up over the thighs and tum! It’s interesting how patterns use waist and hips and mine bear no real resemblance to my bigger parts.

I will assess again in front of a full length mirror when finished.

New machine arrived early, I thanked the delivery driver profusely.
I tested it by using it to sew hat costumes for World Book Day.
So far I have a cat and a dog, but it only arrived an hour ago so I think that's fairly good.
Only another 10 or so animals to design and make by Thursday...

CrimsonAlligator · 26/02/2023 19:02

@ChoccyJules a full tummy adjustment may help solve the problem -

curvysewingcollective.com/tutorial-full-tummy-adjustment-pants-or-skirt/

if you have too much fabric around the waist, that’s an easy thing to fix, but frustratingly I can’t find an easy tutorial anywhere. If you search for “how to fix a waist gap” you can see how people make these changes on shop bought trousers, jeans etc.

Basically what you do is pinch out the excess fabric at the back, which will be roughly triangle shaped. Use pins to keep it in place. If you measure the triangle you pinched out (width at the top and height of the triangle) that shows you what changes you need to make to the backseat on your pattern to get a better fit. I’m probably not explaining it very well, but it’s honestly the easiest thing to fix 🙃

CrimsonAlligator · 26/02/2023 19:04

That should say “back seam” not “back seat” 🙄

ChoccyJules · 26/02/2023 20:37

@CrimsonAlligator Thank you - that full tummy adjustment is actually understandable and I am going to give it a go!

Been sewing up a storm this morning, I've got three farm animal costumes finished and 7 more that just need detail like eyes or noses sewing on.
Two more to do tomorrow and then a rest before Thursday.
When I find my sew-Jo I'm unstoppable

That's amazing work. Is it for a school?

I've had the best compliment I could have asked for about my sewing - DS has asked me to make him a pair of shorts, exactly like the ones I made last summer but a size bigger. I've managed to find the same fabric so that will be high on my list of projects.

InMySpareTime · 28/02/2023 13:04

It is for a school, I have a booking to run story workshops all day, then an assembly at the end.
Got some more done today, it's all coming together now.

@InMySpareTime that must be a wonderful job. Sewing and spending your time with rooms full of excited little children!

MissMarplesNiece · 01/03/2023 16:17

@InMySpareTime Fab hats, I'd love to "see them in action"

InMySpareTime · 01/03/2023 16:28

I'm all set for taking the hats to a school tomorrow, don't know if I'll get photos though as it's a school.
The hats are for the teachers though, so I might get to take some photos.

youmustbemad · 03/03/2023 18:21

Omg I had no idea mumsnet had a sewing thread! I feel like I've found my spiritual home.
Someone above was asking about deer and doe - they draft for pears with small boobs. The plantain top has the shallowest armscye curve I've ever seen. It's so unflattering on me (big boobs). Just to warn you.
Their nenuphar jacket and opium coat are great though, but obvs no fitting needed. I made the nenuphar in loop back French Terry and it's lovely, so comfy.

NutellaEllaElla · 03/03/2023 19:38

Yay! Welcome @youmustbemad. The ladies on this thread are amazing. I love seeing what everyone makes. They're so talented.

I'm returning home tomorrow from a trip away. I've had a rough sewing patch lately, my fault for being ambitious!

I went through a stage where everything I made was shit. Gave up for a while, almost permanently but then had to make something really simple for someone and got the bug again.

Now if something goes wrong I'm much better as chalking it up as a learning curve rather than a failure.

My next projects are going to be a sirocco jumpsuit in a nice stretchy crepe fabric and a Forget Me Not Adeline Wrap .... dress or top not decided yet in either a lovely silky denim coloured ramie or a black linen. Fabric and patterns both arrived this morning but I've had a mammoth few days sewing two world book day costumes so am giving the sewing machine a rest for the night.

CrimsonAlligator · 04/03/2023 11:19

Welcome to the thread and thanks for the heads up about Deer and Doe patterns @youmustbemad . I don’t have a large chest, so fingers crossed the pattern I bought works for me, without too many alterations.

I’m still working on the Sewaholic Granville. Progress is slow because I’ve kind of lost interest. Only the sleeves to go, but even those seem to involve a lot of steps. I must try and muster up some enthusiasm for tackling the sleeve plackets later today!

Ulysses · 04/03/2023 17:26

I’ve made the Sirocco jumpsuits in stretch crepe too and it’s one of the nicest things I’ve made. It’s comfortable and beautifully tailored. Im 5’4” and had to reduce the leg length by a fair amount while keeping the tapered bottom. I also wish I had used a more stable fabric for the pocket lining (not the part you can see) rather than the stretchy main fabric.

NutellaEllaElla · 04/03/2023 18:01

Ooh Next In Fashion season 2 is out on Netflix! loved that one, the one with Tan France in it. Looking forward to watching it now.

I've also heard sewing bee starts around Easter this year.

I filled in the application last year for this series after I was sent a DM on Instagram from them, but didn't send it it in the end.
