Learning to sew

My dad has given me an old singer sewing machine and I’d love to be able to learn to sew. I’d like to make cushion covers , little fabric hearts , simple dresses etc but I have only ever knitted things before so I’m clueless.
can anyone point me in the right direction and help me get started. ? Where do I start ? Will an old machine do the job ?

Obviously you can use books and YouTube, but you might find it helpful to do a workshop, online or at a college or shewing shop. I did one and found it so helpful as I could ask questions. From there, there are LOADS of help and resources online in the form of blogs etc.

A sewing shop might be even more helpful than a shewing one!

I haven't done these classes but I thought they looked really good. Instead I signed up to a few in person classes as I don't own a machine yet.

If there are any classes local to you I think a few in person classes would be the best starting point.

Ooh I’d love to be able to properly make dresses. My MIL can sew beautifully but I fear I don’t have the patience!

I agree that I’d look for a workshop somewhere or other. I always think you learn better in a dedicated class, whenever I say I’ll learn something from YouTube/books I always end up procrastinating!
