Yes that's exactly the kind of thing I'm after - thanks

@sandwiches77 - crochet is generally considered easier. I'm more confident with knitting, but that's really only because I learned knitting before crochet.

Sorry - not sure from your post who you're making the blanket for (or what A/L is Blush), but there are lots of great blanket patterns on Ravelry. My first crochet blanket was a crochet-along pattern called Seaside Stashbusting Blanket, from the Coastal Crochet website. I really liked it because you learn a different crochet stitch in each section, so it teaches you as you go along.

Sorry@sandwiches77 cross post. I've no idea which is easier as crochet seems like some kind of wizardry to me. Do you know roughly what style you want? If it were me, I'd choose one technique, say stripes ( which are pretty easy) or a stitch you like and find a pattern with that. You can do a lot just knowing knit and purl stitches. I'll try and find an easy blanket.

I meant to say @Fairislefandango I only did a single yo for the button hole in the end. The double didn't look great.

Sorry missed vital bits of info! Making for my mum and I have annual leave next week to learn and make! For her to put over her legs, rectangular shape??

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 30/05/2022 17:15

Crochet is much faster than knitting @sandwiches77 even for me who is an indifferent crocheter so I think you could easily crochet a lap blanket in a week.

Oh no @MerylSqueak, ouch! Gin I hope you’ve got some good painkillers! Congratulations on your course though!

My cousin is getting married in Yorkshire in November, inconsiderately it’s the week after a yarn festival but I’m so tempted to do a tour of yarn shops of Yorkshire..

InTheNightWeWillWish · 30/05/2022 19:37

Ouch Meryl I nearly ended up with a boot on myself this week and would have done if I hadn’t fallen on the pram instead! No trip to A&E but sore ankle and my ribs hurt were I crashed into the pram.

@sandwiches77 I would look up Bella Coco grant square tutorial on YouTube. I would pick some nice chunky wool, either a couple of different colours or a colour changing wool, and it should work up really quickly while you’re on leave. You can make granny squares or she also has a tutorial on how to do a granny rectangle. If you want something over her lap, square will be fine but if you do a rectangle then it can also go around her shoulders. Another quick and easy crochet blanket is the corner 2 corner (C2C). Again this works well with colour changing wool. I personally like granny squares to have a couple of colours but C2C looks great as different stripes or one solid colour. This is a C2C blanket I made using hobby crafts chunky wool, I used 1 and a bit balls of white and 2 balls of blue. 2 balls of each colour would make quite a nice size blanket.

*Granny square 🙄

tizwozliz · 30/05/2022 19:51

A star shaped blanket might work well for a lap blanket, I'm sure I've seen it mentioned about the pattern I made a baby blanket for, something to do with not having the excess weight at the corners dragging it down.

www.ravelry.com/projects/Sunshineminnow/rainbow-ripple-baby-blanket

Would also work with colour changing wool so not many ends to sew in and nothing to sew together at the end. You also don't have to decide on a size, just keep going until you feel it's big enough

Found you all!

@SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound and @MerylSqueak sorry to see both of your recent losses on the last thread Thanks. I hope you're both doing ok?

@Fairislefandango when do you start your new job? (Apologies if you already mentioned)

I'm making steady progress with the stego this week - about 2/3 of the way through his body now so I'll pop up a pic when I've started to stuff him tomorrow.

I'm off to read the beginning of this thread now 🙂

CrochetBug · 31/05/2022 20:49

@StillNiceCardigan oh she's lovely. <curtsies to Her Maj>

I still have no crojo at all. So I'll throw some yarn around and you can all help yourselves Grin

Seriously though. My stash is looking at me and making me feel guilty. I have almost finished another frog hat for DSs friend, brown not green though. It's taken a week when I can usually do it in an evening Hmm

StillNiceCardigan · 31/05/2022 21:25

Nice to see lots of yarn around @CrochetBug I’m sure your crojo will find its way back when it’s ready.

Looking forward to seeing the stego @lucysmam

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 31/05/2022 21:36

Thanks @lucysmam His funeral is tomorrow so it’ll be easier in a way when it’s over I think. It’s been nice to read the tributes paid to him, he wouldn’t have expected them but it’s lovely to see how he’s remembered.

How’s your FIL getting on with your wheel btw @Fairislefandango? Did your spare parts arrive?

Fairislefandango · 31/05/2022 22:09

<admires strewn yarn> Wow - your 'no crojo' speed of getting through projects sounds about twice as fast as my normal speed, @CrochetBug ! Hope you get back to full crojo soon though!

I don't start my new job until September, @lucysmam , but I got a lovely email from my new Head of Department today. Dh starts his new job tomorrow, which is exciting! His first ever working day of not being a teacher Shock.

Your blanket is beautiful, @tizwozliz.
I am just starting out with crochet at the moment, I have a granny square blanket in progress. I think I might prefer it to knitting once I get a bit better.

Fairislefandango · 31/05/2022 22:32

I still prefer knitting really. I'm not sure what it is about it, but it just appeals to me more. I really enjoy crochet too, and it's nice to swap from one to the other for variety. One thing I do love about crochet is how much easier it is to undo mistakes!

OP posts:
SpeedofaSloth · 31/05/2022 22:48

I like having only one live stitch, I think. It's easier to unravel back to a mistake than knitting!

sophs29 · 01/06/2022 19:08

Hope todays been ok for you @SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound I'm sure you've heard lots more lovely stories to help you through Flowers

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 01/06/2022 21:59

Thanks @sophs29Brew it was a lovely service.

Fairislefandango · 02/06/2022 08:37

Glad it was a lovely service, @SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound .

The spare parts haven't arrived with FIL yet, unfortunately. I just emailed the woman at WeftBlown, but unsurprisingly got an auto reply as it's Bank Holiday!

Dh had a good first day at his new job (followed now by 4 days off!). I'm busy starting to brush up some rusty bits by listening to French and German podcasts and looking at vocab for A Level topics I haven't taught for ages. I need to be on top form!

Definitely going to get some crafting time in the next few days though. I want to finish my Pixie and my Kindle case, which are both pretty small projects. Then I fancy something that's bit more of a challenge...

OP posts:
MerylSqueak · 02/06/2022 08:58

I hope you are coping ok. @SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound .

Exciting times for you @Fairislefandango

I'm a bit stuck with knitting. Perfect time to do it as I'm sitting down all the time but in the last two days I've realised that the yarn I've bought for one thing isn't right, I've frogged my bedspread as I have made a mistake somewhere which I can't find and I've just found a gorgeous cotton velvet bedspread anyway. Plus, I have yarn for another scarf but I've just made two so can't get up the enthusiasm. Hmm.

Fairislefandango · 03/06/2022 10:11

Finished my Kindle case. It's a bit rustic, but it serves its purpose!

We'll I think it is cute.

Still swatching every yarn I have!

Fairislefandango · 03/06/2022 16:28

Thanks Smile
What project are you swatching for, @MerylSqueak ?
I need to decide what I'm going to make next. I fancy a bigger project, probably something to wear... but I've got so much yarn (one or two balls if each) and I feel like I need to use up some rather than buying a load more for a new project!

OP posts:
MerylSqueak · 03/06/2022 16:56

Well, just to see what I could do with what I have got.

At the moment I have settled on this jumper

jumper

in this yarn

Sirdar summer linen

but I am not 100% sold on it as the yarn is incredibly splitty and the design is very simple and maybe a bit dull becaus eof this.

I also nee to find something to do with this

this

but I can't get guage on anything where I can understand the pattern. Drops have a few patterns I like but I just get bamboozled.

MerylSqueak · 03/06/2022 16:57

Any ideas for any of it welcome!

tizwozliz · 03/06/2022 17:03

My next project is going to be something to wear I think. Probably this

www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/happy-at-home-hoodie

But I'm being strict with myself and trying to finish some stuff off before starting anything new. To that end today I've been sewing in ends on a blanket I finished years ago! Two thirds down, one third left to go!
