Help - ruined 100% merino wool scarf dd knitted me for Xmas - can it be rescued?

Dd is new to knitting (an adult) but had covid before Xmas and spent her time in isolation knitting a scarf kit she'd been gifted a few years prior, and gave it to me (proudly) for Xmas. It was a bit too long and thin but lovely of course but it had badly curled up either side so needed flattening (sorry can't remember the proper term atm) I diligently pinned it all and misted it etc but when it had dried it was exactly the same.

I found it the other day and thought I'd pop it in with my hand washing and flatten it after, did that today (wool setting 30 degrees) and it's come out shrunken and matted looking! I'm gutted - is there anything anyone can suggest I do to save it please?

Soak it in fabric softener

Stretch it out when wet/ damp

It's been felted. Can't really be undone. Bug dometimes csn bd improved by washing it very gently in hair conditioner and easing it back into shape.

Get a bucket or bowl. Put in blood temperature warm water. Swirl in fabric softener. Place the scarf in fully immersed. Gently move it about and then just let it relax. After an hour put it in a rinse bowl of warm water. Gentle agitating until rinsed. Have a thick folded long white towel somewhere flat. Carefull lay out the scarf onto the towel and gently ease and stretch to shape and leave to dry.
Fingers crossed!
