No! I didn't ask either. I will just have to go out and treat myself when the kiddies are back at school/nursery.
I am starting to work on some embellishments ATM. I need to be more organised and prepare things that I can do easily alongside DH rather thn out in the conservatory on my own.
I live in hope that it wil be easier in 2005, dd will be a nursery 5 mornings a week! I can use that time doing the "making up" IYSWIM, where I need to spread out more and have the table set up.
I still really enjoy the cardmaking, but I need the motivation of a order sometimes.
I remember this time last year, I told myself that I would work through our own card list month by month,to be prepared. As if that was going to happen! Who knows, perhaps this year....!

AuntyQuated · 31/12/2004 14:58

i often wonder how pwople work.

sometimes i do one card at a time, sometimes i do a few embellishments (then lose them), sometimes i do 5 or so of one design on a production line!

Hi Layla, I'm still around! Not so much recently, DH has been off of work, went back today. That and the kiddies being off-we are completely out of routine and had a mad dash to school this morning.
I cheated with my son's friend-they all recieved shop bought cards, there was just too much to do and I was running out of time.
There may be a few of us trying to start a e-mail swap for ideas! Did you get your digital camera for xmas?

layla · 06/01/2005 16:20

Hi Dingle!Nice to hear from you,we had a lovely xmas and did get a digital camera for xmas. And i needed it too to take some piccies for a magazine article about ME!It's really exciting.i just wrote a letter into the magazine and they phoned me up to ask if they could do an atricle about my cards and the swaps i organise. So I took some piccies of them and me for it.
How's the card making going for the downs syndrome association?

Oh dear, spent over £6 on mags today already!
Don't usually buy PC but they had some little mini wire coathangers and I thought that justified paying £2.95.

layla · 06/01/2005 18:22

alliwannado · 10/01/2005 14:48

hi, im new to this area!! wondered if you ladies could advise me on a few things.... here goes - I want to get into card making and have been looking to buy for a few weeks now but theres so much out there im overwhelmed with it all.... ....what stamp/what ink/what pens/what paper etc etc need I go on. i know the stamps i like 'hero arts' so expensive though.....
never done it before so will be starting from scratch, what would you all say are the essentials for starting out..... and can you recommend stamping ink/pens etc? from a very confused person

Dingle · 10/01/2005 16:49

For basic stamping (as opposed to embossing) I would start with a few stamps, a quick drying-dye based ink pad in black and a colouring medium.

For colouring you can used basic coloured pencil, watercolours, gel pens, glittler glues. You don't necessarily have to pay out for specialised "craft" stuff, use a few alternatives from your local staionery shop to see how you get on.

I tend to use black for most of my designs, and it is definately a stockbox basic for me.

Good luck -I'm sure you will find it very addictive!

Stamps are expensive and it's worth looking after them. Cheap tip- I use baby wipes to clean the ink of my stamps. Also, you can varnish the wood part of the stamp with nail varnish which will protect it from stray ink. It's worth looking at a stamp to see what you can do with it, e.g. I have one with a flower inside a square border so I can use it whole or cut the flower out of the centre, IYSWIM.

JaysMum · 11/01/2005 09:15

How glad am I that Ive found the Arts & Crafts section....Yipeeeeeeeeee
Hubby groaned this morning when I told him I had found you all...."more money spent on bits and bobs to clutter the house with"...tee hee hee!!!!

This was the first christmas I made my own cards. Started in Sept and made 100...sold them to friends, so had to make a second batch and then they got snatched up...so by the time I'd made my own I started to think I could make a living out of this!!!!

I also made some Christmas surprises for the Kids in our village and some little gift boxes cotaining a Christmas Decoration Keepsake.

Working on the Easter Card designs at the moment....

alliwannado · 11/01/2005 10:32

thanks for the advice, baby wipes saves money......... the stamps are so expensive..... I haven't got anything and need to make a start! I want stamps/inks/pens/paper/shrink plastic/embossing stuff/aquaglass stuff/embellishments LOL LOL I'd need a loan, I have to prioritise,.......thats hard when i want them all!

NikkiB · 11/01/2005 15:30

Hello all.
I'm totally new at this, but have thouroughly enjoyed reading the conversations! I feel so nosey! Is that normal?
Just a tip... my husband and I had our cards created this Christmas by a little company called Vanilla Cards... They were fantastic! For those of us without an artistic bone anywhere to be seen! Our daughter Lily did the painting which went on the front, and they even put her picture on the back! Lily's only just 1 so it is gorgeous! www.vanillacards.com

hi everyone!
I really want to get crafty but not sure i'll be any good at it, worth a try though!
I have looked in my local craft shop but to be honest didn't know where to start and didn't really know how your supposed to use a lot of the stuff
I have some card, things to stick on, some stickers and a stamper and pad.
what other esentials should i get and what can you wise people tell me

Dingle · 11/01/2005 15:56

A lot of the small independent craft shops do classes. These would be great for beginners, give you a chance to see what's available & how to use it. I did a couple of stamping classes last year, they only cost about £12 for a couple of hours and it gives you the chance to have a go before buying up the whole shop!!(however tempting it is!)
I would also recommend watch the cardmaking slots on QVC. I don't know if there are any beforehand but there is an all day event on the "20th Jan I THINK!! Don't be tempted by too much though, I personally think the prices work out on the higher side after you pay P&P!!

Happy crafting ladies!!

AuntyQuated · 11/01/2005 16:28

for all those thinking of getting started with card making i suggest the Jan issue of Papercraft Inspirations. i bought it as Layla has a letter in there this month and am very impressed...
in this issue it tells you what you need to start, then there's a list of other handy things; there are a couple of very detailed things to egt you started. i think WH Smith sell it.
there are loads of craft mags out there and tbh some of them are crap so choose carefully.
