Anyone know any good sources?
I need them for coats and cardigans, am thinking maybe cut glass/filigree etc.
TIA

www.thebuttonqueen.co.uk. Not cheap, but I suspect most vintage buttons aren't.

pannacotta - are you still looking for vintage buttons? i am a button obsessive and may well have gorgeous buttons you'll want . . . .

DaisyMoo · 02/12/2007 13:50

In the same vein, does anyone know where you can get wooden buttons, heart-shaped especially. I would love some.

Tamum · 02/12/2007 14:20

Pavi Yarns has a good selection of buttons in general. I have been buying up lots of the Nichols buttons from there and their own website- expensive but wonderful. JosyRose is worth a look in general, but not for vintage. For ceramic non-vintage Injabulo are great (I know this isn't the sort of thing you're after Pannacotta, just thought I would answer a bit generally)

Daisyboo, I have some heart shaped wooden buttons but need to try and remember where I got them from....

Tamum · 02/12/2007 14:22

Just read your message again DB- for non-heart shaped ones you could have a look at Scottish Fibres. They usually do some in John Lewis, too.

this is the type of thread that makes me think ohh I wonder where my xxxx(insert a missing object) is and then spend the rest of the night rushing to odd places convinced things are there.

in this case it is an old box full of buttons! My dad collected them for me when I was a child (I loved sewing) he used to work in a factory and there was always a box of rags(old clothes) to wipe your hands on he used to spend his lunch hour going throught the box and cutting off all the buttons for me

DaisyMoo · 02/12/2007 18:15

WOODEN HEART BUTTONS!!! I heart you Squonk

twinsetandpearls · 02/12/2007 18:17

twinsetandpearls · 02/12/2007 18:21

I used to love the button shop in the aracade in Leeds, I may pay it a visit under the guise of christmas shopping.

SquonkaClaus · 02/12/2007 18:55

I knew my extensive knowledge of button shops would come in handy one day

hi grouchy, how's you?

Katymac · 02/12/2007 19:01

I used to work in a button wholesaler

I hated leaving as we got to keep some buttons each week

I love buttons - I have some silver ones with dragons on

twinset - duttons (the button shop) is closed now and in it's place is a sunglasses shop, in fact the whole of the Victoria Quarter has changed from being full of individual shops to full of 'top end' high streets shops. Even Boodle-Am (you'll know it if you saw it - it was full of kickers, and hats and masks and hippy type kaftans and that kind of stuff) is on its way out (it was next to Duttons, but much bigger). It's closing this year, which is such a shame (it was the place my DH got his first pair of kickers from aged about 2!) - the rent has just been whacked right up to get rid of all of the little people . HOWEVER....Duttons is still very much alive and kicking in Harrogate take a peek!!!

Gingermonkey · 05/01/2008 15:20

poo - my link didn't work. Try again, TWINSET - looky here!!!

CarrieBlue · 05/01/2008 18:12

and Duttons is still alive and kicking in York, I'll vouch for that!

ArrietyClock · 05/01/2008 21:52

Duttons for Buttons has a website!!!! Was pining for a trip to Duttons the other day but it's a bit of a long drive these days...... t'is fab they do mail order. (Fear excessive and unnecessary button buying may be about to take place).
