I'm going to take the plunge and try to learn.

Can anyone recommend a beginners set, or where to start, please?

I've never even attempted to before so I'm a complete novice.

Thank you.

Watching with interest!
I've never mastered it and I so so would like to!

Cheap needle -mine came from Wilko and was about a pound- as did a ball of cheap wool, then look at you tube videos and play for a bit. This lets you see how to do a basic stitch, and a few patterns with double loops etc, then you're off. It's fun!

Thank you.

I'm just going to do it. I'll be useless but it'll give me something to do!

You need the right sized hook for your yarn - go with a 4mm hook and DK yarn. The ball band on the yarn should tell you what size hook you need.

I learnt from a book but lots on people on MN recommend Bella Coco video tutorials.

When I learnt, I learnt the basics and then made a giant granny square blanket (only baby sized!) as this meant I was doing the same thing over and over which sort of cemented the moves in my head,

Thank you, @MrsWooster and @SoupDragon - very helpful.

I need to find something that's not my phone to occupy my time.

Bella Coco helped me and then I moved onto Attic 24 who does some good photo tutorials

I used the Bella Coco videos too, and slowed the speed down so I could really follow exactly what she was doing.

Bella Coco videos for the basic stitch. Then I recommend costal crotchet for the seaside stashbuster blanket. 4 mm hooks and some stylecraft DK. That will help you learn lots of new Stiches and her videos are really clear.

Buy a clover touch hook in size 3.5 or 4 and a cheap ball of wool. I would start with making a granny square. There are lots of tutorials online. I've been crocheting since a young child and it soothes my soul. I'm sure you will love it!
