Rejoining as between work being madness and homeschooling I haven’t had any time to sew. I have just ordered some new pdf patterns to be printed though, so quite excited about getting them

IDontMindMarmite · 11/02/2021 17:37

Thank you for your help everyone! I think I'll pack up my project for today. I've been going very slowly and methodically but still had to unpick the same side seam twice as it trapped a dart in an awkward folded position. My next step is doing rolled hems on the sleeves. I won't be buying a new foot for it but am waiting for the invisible zip foot to arrive for later in the project.

DH bought me a dummy mannequin thing for my birthday but I've told him to send it back. I'm not sure that I'll be doing lots of full dress making projects like this. Maybe some PJ's and some more alterations but that's probably it.

What are the patterns of @Stretchandsnap?

If darts and seams are flipping the wrong way, just tack them down, within the seam allowance. Doesn't have to be by hand. A long machine stitch will do the trick.

If I have something I want to double check before it goes under the presser foot, I mark it with a pin that stands out - either a different type of pin or one facing the opposite way to the others.

Well, I got some Some patterns for my daughters for the spring/summer - I figure if I aim for the summer I will have a chance of completing them Grin. Got the following patterns and a couple of free ones I’ve saved randomly printed
www.ellieandmac.com/products/puff-sleeve-peplum-dress-bodysuit-pattern
www.ellieandmac.com/products/summer-nights-romper-set-pattern?_pos=2&_sid=551eeaa54&_ss=r
And a freebie legging pattern:
www.patternsforpirates.com/product/peg-legs/

Shout out to planprintinguk.com/sewing-pattern-printing I uploaded the patterns today at 12pm and they delivered them today at 4pm! I couldn't believe it!

So I am going to spend a nice couple of hours on Saturday measuring the girls and looking at the patterns as I know I am going to have to lengthen (DD is 11 and 5’8 and has cold ankles at the moment!)

PickAChew · 11/02/2021 19:07

Thanks @utterpiffle, BTW. Looks like I'd be a 10 E/F in cashmerette sizing. It'll be interesting to see how the sizing works out on their non-stretch patterns.

IDontMindMarmite · 11/02/2021 19:24

Great advice @PickAChew, I should have been checking more closely.

Ah thanks for the free leggings pattern @Stretchandsnap, I was thinking of doing fleecy lined leggings for pyjama bottoms. Looks like there's plenty to keep you busy there Smile

Oh I love adding French seams. It just makes me happy to have beautiful guts to my homemade clothes. But I don’t have an over locker so it really helps with woven things. Not so fussed about knits as they tend to be relatively stable (or at least the ones i buy)

I have wool to use. Trying to decide between a fess for work or a fun coat. Sappo maybe?

Stretchandsnap · 11/02/2021 21:02

@StatisticallyChallenged ooh I love that! Great fabric choice as well

PickAChew · 11/02/2021 22:46

I picked up the pattern for the opium coat with an order, recently. Love a swing coat and have been wanting a decent wool coat for years but unwilling to pay what they actually cost, nowadays, for something that won't get worn daily, and it gives me all year to find the perfect wool for it.

Hadn’t realised this had moved onto a second thread, glad I’ve caught up now. I’ve got a T-shirt for my 3 year old made that just needs hemming, but she’s insisting she helps - luckily my machine has a speed control and a stop/start button as there’s no way she can reach the foot pedal 😂
Next on the list after that is home decor sewing, altering curtains, making cushion covers and a cover for the armchair as we’re redecorating.

drspouse · 12/02/2021 11:23

I put the foot pedal on their old bathroom step for my DCs from about 5y.

Bogoroditse · 12/02/2021 13:31

I let my 5 year old sit on my lap and she steers and I do the pedal. I feel like a driving instructor with an emergency brake! Good luck!

kittykarate · 12/02/2021 15:03

I've bought my first pdf patterns and sent them off for printing at netprinter.co.uk. I'll let you know how they do - the dispatch turn around was pretty good (uploaded at 9am, printed by 12, allegedly in the post).

I've gone for the Yoko roll neck top (Free!) jalie.com/products/yoko-square-roll-neck-top-free-sewing-pattern and after my ballet wrap top disaster last week jalie.com/products/faux-wrap-top-sewing-pattern .It has a lot of good reviews, so hopefully will turn out better than last weekend's effort.

PickAChew · 12/02/2021 20:53

That's nice @kittykarate. I like the slim neckline.

My new machine has a brilliant stretch stitch apart from the lightning bolt. I don't rate it for seams, as it's quite jerky and makes it difficult to sew smooth curves but it's proving brilliant for attaching cuffs.

Does it have the triple straight stretch stitch? That makes for some mighty strong seams on mine. Even though I overlock I often use it as extra security on the seams of my leggings as they have a hard life!
drspouse · 12/02/2021 21:20

Sweat and tears but DD has done some lovely sewing on a cushion which is now on her bed. Now to move on with my own stuff!

PickAChew · 12/02/2021 21:51

She's done brilliantly, there, @drspouse

It does have the triple stitch, @statisticallychallenged though I've only bothered with it, the once. Finishing with zigzags seems to be all the reinforcement I need. I'm more of a rubbing thighs onto bobbly oblivion person.

Finished my sweatshirt, anyhow. Had to lengthen the neckband, which is common for this one, but went a bit too far so it gapes slightly at the back. Love and learn.

And say hello to the sad man in my bedroom door.

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/02/2021 21:56

To be fair I've never actually ripped a pair - I think I'm just paranoid that home made ones won't be as sturdy as shop bought! I hear you on the bobbly oblivion, but it's better than my DH who actually rubs holes in the thighs of jeans.

PickAChew · 12/02/2021 22:15

I've worn through thighs, too. DH rips all his knees. Bony knees, that man.

drspouse · 12/02/2021 22:24

That is a NICE sweatshirt.
I blame cycling for my thigh rips.

PickAChew · 12/02/2021 22:58

I've been needing to update my selection of sweatshirts for a while - a couple of 5vyearcokd Next ones and a 25 year old M&S one are getting a bit tired. I'm doing a Stella hoodless using dome lovely see you at six french terry, next (can use the neck band that was too Small for the linden on it) and have some mind the maker fabric on the way for some heavier Stella joggers and hoodless.

I see TATB are looking for testers for a larger size range. www.tillyandthebuttons.com/2021/02/extended-pattern-sizes.html
Aa a 14veith a fuller tummy and a bigger bust, I'll need to carry on making my own tweaks.
