Any synthetic curls up and turns into molten plastic.
Plant fibres turn into ash.
Animal fibres smell like rotten eggs.

Drspouse that fabric is lovely.

After last week’s sewing bee I ordered the Myosotis dress which is going to become my summer buffet dress! But first, I need to finish the Papercut Patterns Coppelia wrap cardigan.

drspouse · 21/04/2021 22:08

It's viscose, really slippery and difficulty to cut.

Ulysses · 21/04/2021 22:22

That’s beautiful fabric @drspouse love the border. Do you need to buy more than usual to pattern match?

I’ve keep a can of spray starch for slippy fabric. It helps a bit anyway.

I really like the Mytosis dress - it looks really special. I’ve seen it done with waist ties to cinch it in a bit and I really like the silhouette it gives.

PickAChew · 21/04/2021 22:42

@Ulysses

I’m sure By Hand Land posted something on Instagram about burning the fibres to test to see what they might be. Might be worth a go? I mean findibg out the tutorial first before setting your fabric alight!
The lighter test does work. It's how I discovered that some "silk" yarn that I'd been sent was actually rayon!
Jins · 21/04/2021 22:46

That is beautiful fabric. I do love a bit of viscose.

I’ve been good today and prewashed 3 lengths of viscose. I’m a bit hit and miss with prewashing generally but now I can overlock the raw edges it seemed sensible. It was a good day to hang them on the line as well. Shrinkage seems minimal which is good news and the lengths have stayed straight.

I’ve got some plain black challis which is earmarked for a rhapsody blouse and the butterick tunic I tested last week. If there’s any left it’ll end up as Ogden number 3. The plain black twill I’m not sure about yet. It’s very drapey but quite sturdy. It can live in the stash for a while. The other lengths are floral challis and one will become the tunic dress that came free with Love sewing this month. The other I’m not sure about yet.

PickAChew · 21/04/2021 22:48

That pattern is gorgeous, @drspouse.

My dashed shirt had me swearing, again, today. Thankfully, I still had plenty of fabric left and I have annotated the layout diagram. It's a typically minimalist Japanese book but was probably too minimalist at this point, to the point of being misleading - ie looking like the pattern pieces were cut from the wrong side when it should actually be the right side.

PickAChew · 21/04/2021 22:51

And yeah, not the straightest cutting. Thankfully my new cutting wheel has arrived.

drspouse · 21/04/2021 22:58

I bought the fabric without a pattern in mind, it will be sleeveless but I think I just bought a random metre and I could have got sleeves out of it as well but I'm doing sleeveless.
I did a FBA on the bust ages ago, I can't remember which top it is that I made now but this is stretch fabric so I'm sure it will fit.

BirdsInTheAttic · 21/04/2021 23:35

I’ve just received some fabric today that I bought on a whim online and I have no idea what I was thinking Confused It’s plain organic cotton jersey, lovely fabric, but the colours...
I was sort of planning mustard / burgundy pjs or joggers for DS and DD but they have well and truly turned their noses up at the colours. If all else fails I will make myself some pyjama shorts as I’m less fussy!

NutellaEllaElla · 22/04/2021 13:53

I have received some fabric today and I am absolutely delighted with it! Great result as I didn't buy a sample. I did buy some Broderie Anglaise samples but am not in love with them. I want white not yellowy/cream and they're v expensive so back to the drawing board. Having said that, i've now got fabric for 2 dresses, one top, one kimono, a pyjama top, trousers and shorts! I need to get sewing don't I?!!

Jins · 22/04/2021 15:51

I too have had a successful fabric delivery today. Some silver/grey muslin for an idea I’ve got for window treatment and some double georgette in my mum’s favourite non colour that will be perfect for some low maintenance trousers
poundfabrics.co.uk/products/grey-beige-heavy-georgette-fabric?list_generator=order_line_item&user_id=51578676&utm_source=shop_app&context=order_first_order_summary_line_item
I paid more in postage than fabric this time round.

I’m off to Abakhan tomorrow if all goes well. I may be some time 😂

NutellaEllaElla · 22/04/2021 16:42

Ok, I found the Broderie Anglaise fabric I was looking for. Turns out, the perfect thing is actually cotton lawn with heirloom lacework.
Now I ABSOLUTELY MUST STOP BUYING FABRIC! Except I now need lining

NutellaEllaElla · 22/04/2021 16:43

I dare not add up how much i've spent on fabric this month.
Sticks credit card in water and puts in freezer

Jins · 23/04/2021 10:58

The sun is shining, I’ve done all the things I needed to do so I’m off to Abakhan.

I need curtain tape. I don’t need anything else. I will however be unable to carry the bags back to my car.

Good job it’s cheap

NutellaEllaElla · 23/04/2021 11:04

Grin Enjoy Jins!
I'm on the floor sellotaping and cutting out pdf print out patterns. It's calming.

kittykarate · 23/04/2021 11:06

Oooh a rummage in Abakhan! So jealous.

I've just got my recent delivery from Pound a Metre. 3m of black cotton with white flowers that I'm going to turn into 2 pairs elastic waist work at home trousers (from tilly and the buttons Marigold), and 3m of paisley pattern lycra that doesn't have a a firm plan yet, but most likely some more yoga pants from Sew Your Own Activewear.

Jins · 23/04/2021 12:41

I’m back!!!!

Curtain tape sorted and if it had been on the top floor like all the other tapes I might have resisted but sadly it’s right at the back of the bottom floor.

So I have a metre or so of white cotton lawn with tiny sprigs of flowers in red and blue which I’ll make a shell top out of.
2m of Grey cotton jersey for a T shirt for DH who feels left out and 2.5-3m floral print jersey of unknown composition in neutral shades for a laundry day tee for me.

Oh and getting on for 3m of beautiful drapey slinky viscose print in black with teeny flowers for an unknown project but possibly a dolman sleeved shirt dress courtesy of a love sewing pattern a few months back.

£28.

NutellaEllaElla · 23/04/2021 21:12

Yay! Sounds like you got a lot for that price!

Ulysses · 24/04/2021 08:32

I'm wondering what a laundry day tee is @Jins? Is that a Mumsnet thing Grin.

Nice shopping ladies. My local fabric shop opens up on Monday and I'm going for a rummage. I really don't need anymore viscose prints but we'll see...

Buttons remain to be sewn on but don't think they are big enough to cover up much of the botch I made with the first buttonholes. If I thought of it I could have used the other side for the buttonholes but I've cut through the fabric now. Also Ogden cami is too long to be worn underneath, though a good length for tucking in with blouse over.

That's interesting what you said about the actual name of the fabric @NutellaEllaElla. I got cotton voile but it's really sheer hence making the cami for underneath. There's so much different types of textured white cotton fabric but other than Swiss dot or broderie anglaise I'm not sure what you need to search for.

Jins · 24/04/2021 08:41

@Ulysses it sounds like it should be a mumsnet thing doesn’t it?😂. It’s a love notions pattern that can be free with a code from the Facebook group. The dress has been on my to do list for a while but I didn’t have fabric that I thought would work

www.lovenotions.com/product/laundry-day-tee-xs-xxxl

The Ogden cami is quite long. I was surprised when I made my first one. Suits someone like me with a tummy to hide though

Ulysses · 24/04/2021 09:13

Ah that of course makes much more sense than a specific garment to worn on laundry day (which in my case is every single day)!

NutellaEllaElla · 24/04/2021 09:23

Love a free pattern, thanks for the tip.
