RAG RUG

Hey all, I am thinking of making a rag rug type thing as an art project. Is there a really good place online or in RL to buy the kind of material suitable (I think it needs to be fairly thin and stretchy??) hoping to get loads of different kinds and colours.

My mam makes these (I think I'm thinking of the same things, there are clippy mats and also kind of crocheted fabric that she makes) and she and I are forever buying larger sized t-shirts from the £1 rack in charity shops.

You can cut them into short strips or one long strip by cutting round and round and then rolling it into a ball, if that makes sense? I'm sure you can buy 'rags' but of course in the old days they actually would have used whatever ragged old fabric was available, ultimate in recycling! 😂

Hope it goes well!

I've made many rag rugs; I use clothes too far gone to go to a charity shop, or stuff from the £1 rack like Apapuchi's mum.

thanks for your replies! Have either of you used chiffon? I'm now looking into different materials and chiffon seems a bit mad but I thought it could have a nice effect.

I haven't used chiffon because my rugs were made to be walked on (in a narrowboat) and it probably wouldn't survive. If it's a wall hanging it could look good; make a small sample first.

I made one out of old t-shirts. It is quite time consuming what with cutting them into strips, plaiting, and then sewing them up.

The mistakes I made at first was to make the strips too narrow and trying to sew it on my lap.

The next one will be made from old jeans I think.
