Can't get hold of white acrylic paint...

Hi all, dc2 is doing A level art at home during lockdown, she's a painter. Can't get hold of white acrylic paint for love nor money though have got some on order with a longish lead time. Question - is there any reason why she couldn't use white interior eggshell decorating paint that I have? It's water based and pretty sure it's acrylic. I appreciate this may be a stupid question! Thanks.

The works, online orders.

Thanks! Seems to be out of stock everywhere I look but I'll look again.

Hi eggshell is modern day version of old fashioned emulsion so not quite the right kind I don't think.

I also paint and just last week managed to get some white acrylic online from Cass art. It was their own brand not the one I usually use but will do the job. But yes it took about a week to arrive.

If you want to use house paint you will need the paint for walls NOT woodwork if that makes sense. Although having said all that what's the harm in trying it and seeing if it does what she needs it to do? Presumably she only needs to know it won't interact badly with the other paints she is using? Mixes well and that sort of thing?

I'd suggest ask on a local FB page, sure to be people that have some, unused like us! Daughter has a whole new art set bought for her A level art, and she never used it!

Lidl do sets of acrylics quite often, they might be worth a check.

Thanks all! I went back to the Works online and did manage to get it plus burnt umber etc. Asking on FB great idea too. Much appreciated. (She has done a Lucian Freud style portrait of me. V good but VERY alarming. Do I really look like THAT? 😫😂). Thanks again.

Would love to see it OP!

It really looks like me so it might blow my Mumsnet cover! (At least it wasn't in the style of Benefits Supervisor Sleeping...)

Just for future, normal emulsion paint is basically acrylic paint but with more pigment (so better coverage)

MrsEricBana · 28/04/2020 12:12

wonderrotunda Thank you! We'll try it because the order will take a few days in any case. Maybe she can employ the Farrow & Ball leftovers for a different look! #lockdownart
p.s. Loved last night's Grayson Perry's Art Club (Ch4 8pm)

wonder isn't emulsion a bit shiny though? Does it mix ok?

Paddingtonthebear · 28/04/2020 12:15

MrsEricBana · 30/04/2020 16:01

Buntyforgirls The Works order has arrived only 2 days later. Loads of paints, paper palettes etc - exactly what she needed - and good price. Yay and phew! Thanks all.

I think there's been an ongoing supply problem with white- my DD was trying to get some for ages in December, and it was always out of stock. She managed to get some in February, but had waited quite a while.
