I've though Mumsnet needed a "yarn group" rolling thread, and now I'm tired of thinking it so I'm doing it. Share your projects, ask for help, show us amazing new stitches you just learned or post your disasters for commiseration before frogging the whole thing!

First things first, do you knit, crochet or both? And because we all need to share the dirty laundry in our yarn bags...how many WIPs do you have going?

I've knitted for three years but crocheted for about 30. I've got:

-A knitted scarf for myself Scarf Pattern
-One knitted sock done for myself (but I hated the pattern so much I doubt I'll do the second one) I heavily modified a pattern and it didn't work out well.
-One knitted sock for DD (but I will finish those, they're just on the back burner) DD's Socks Pattern
-A half done crocheted scarf for my BIL (I'm going to finish that one on a plane next week) Not using a pattern...he wants super simple so that's what he's getting.
-And 1.5 of fingerless mitts that a friend asked me to make Fingerless Mitts Pattern

That's kind of sick and insane when I put it out there. I jump from piece to piece a lot. I'm at work (I know, I know) but I'll post a pic of the mitts when I get home. I'm feverishly trying to finish those.

Ooo can I join in please? I'm a hooker, self taught to crochet just over a year ago. Finished a baby blanket for a friend this morning, so just down to
one blanket (2/3rds completed) and
3 c2c cushions (I've done the backs, just need to do the fronts)
as my WIPs. But then my attic24 dahlia cal pack was delivered this morning, and I have a number of mandalas that need going onto hoops which I dont have yet.
Oh and about a gazillion projects that I want to do next year.
Too many projects, too few hours.....

Marcipex · 28/12/2019 12:44

@LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow
It’s a great pattern and flexible too. I think the bobble rows really make it distinctive.
Show us yours when you’re ready :)

Cotswoldmama · 28/12/2019 13:14

I'm a crocheter I taught myself about 6 years by watching you tube but that does mean I hold the hook completely wrong.
I crocheted most of my Christmas gift this year. Including these.

Cotswoldmama · 28/12/2019 13:15

Did try to attach photos but for some reason I can't!!

Strawberrycreamsundae · 28/12/2019 14:02

When the DCs were young I knitted and sewed a lot of their clothes and more recently I have knitted for my dgcs and great nieces and nephews.
To my embarrassment I have multiple WIPs- three Attic24 blankets, two childrens' hoodies and two cardigans for me. In mitigation I have knitted 18 pairs of socks now, and I'm literally hooked on doing them because I don't need to think about what I'm doing, it's become automatic!
My DH has taken a big black bag of unwanted wool to the charity shop this morning which has alleviated my guilt over the size of my stash (and I resolutely ripped out several WiPs and sent the yarn too!)
I now feel slightly less bad about the amount of yarn left behind!
I generally knit nowadays but I really need to get those sodding blankets done!

AHobbyaweek · 29/12/2019 10:07

I love getting some real time in the Christmas holidays to crochet! This is my largest WIP, a triangle blanket from a magazine I have had in my stash for a year or so. It is massive and only about halfway done but putting a big dent in it this holiday. The triangles are easy to make and I can knock a load out automatically really quickly but piercing them together can be tedious so decided to do it as I go as I couldn't face waiting until the end and doing it all!

ooh , just seen this thread , may I join?
I have knitted for over 40 years , then taught myself to crochet about 3 years ago , as it is quicker for WH . I sew too , lots ....
I try to be disciplined in not having too many WIPs - I only sew during the day , crochet/knit at night , and have a drag around easy wip if I have to waste time at appointments etc .
mmmmm so -
current wip is squares for WH
then knitting a scarf/poncho thing with some secret santa yarn I was bought
also a drag around wip is a WH baby blanket , been going on for ages from wool I found in my stash from when DD2 was a baby ( along time ago Blush )
I am terrible at buying wool though , especially at shows etc , when you can squish .
Latest finished thing - a hat for DD2 on circular needles , which is a bit of a new thing for me to master - with lovely hand dyed yarn she chose herself- this pattern www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/nautilus-hat-3

I'm hoping the yarn I bought, arrives today so I can start knitting my gryffindor scarves.

Allyg1185 · 07/01/2020 08:38

Hi can I join. I don't know but I crochet ( very new to it ) I'm working on a granny square blanket just now that I've nicknamed Frankenstein because it's using up all my odd wool. Cosy project!Smile

hookiwooki · 07/01/2020 14:14

Hi all. Managed to finish my Christmas projects including stockings, never got round to photos. I've had a chest infection which now apparently sounds clear and apart from a slightly tachy heart rate, all my other markers are normal on paper. I still feel unwell though - weak and generally exhausted and out of breathe. Haven't managed to pick up a hook since Christmas Eve. Hoping to get going again in the next couple of weeks.

Myshitisreal · 08/01/2020 01:51

Hi all, I've not picked up the hook since my Christmas butterflies so maybe coming up to 4 weeks. I had bought 3 balls of baby aran wool to Crochet my mum a scarf towards her birthday but i frogged it 😂

Does anyone know about the UK Crafters for Australia Animal Rescue Effort on Facebook. There are crafters everywhere making pouches, nears and blankets for animals rescued from the fires. They have organised regional hubs to send them to and are trying to get travellers to take them in suitcases or airlines to offer free transport.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/01/2020 07:39

Also on Instagram @animalrescuecraftguild for patterns and information.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 08/01/2020 08:09

I’m joining too. A friend got me started on crocheting a few months ago - she made me up a starter pack and has an amazing ability to assess what I’ve done right / wrong and provide invaluable tips, just from a photo of my work Grin.

I’ve just finished a hat & scarf for myself & (finally) mastered the Attic 24 solid granny square. I’m planning a shawl for my DM’s birthday in March & once that’s done I’m going to start doing squares for Candy’s Hugs.

bellinisurge · 08/01/2020 10:28

I've been doing some stuff for the Animal Rescue Craft Guild. Wonderfully unstylish, practical and small. Stash busting too.

MildDrPepperAddiction · 08/01/2020 12:18

Your projects all look wonderful. I treated myself to some yarn yesterday at a closing down sale (sadly) of one of my favorite shops. I've made a couple of hats for DC4 (due mid March) and am planning booties and mitts also.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 08/01/2020 12:55

Hello friends new & old

@DoubleNegativePanda thank you for starting this lovely thread 🧶

I first learnt to knit when I was quite small - about 4 I think. I can still picture the children’s needles my Aunty bought me & taught me to knit on. I knitted on & off as a child, dropping about as many stitches as I made! But managed a few blankets & scarves etc. 😊. All for my dolls 🤣

I knitted properly for a few years then life & travelling got in the way.

I started again when I found WoollyHugs on here - I think the first time I joined in was. cheeseandgherkins blanket in 2010

I learnt to crochet because it’s so much quicker than knitting and so it’s better for WH squares. I’m still incredibly slow though

I’m so slow that I only do WH squares because if I did other things as well I’d never manage to contribute any to WH.

I’m in total awe of @bookbook and @TheWoollybacksWife (and others!) who produce SO many squares/blankets and then a lot of personal items as well.

I think if I could choose a super power it would be to be able to knit/crochet at a decent speed!

EmpressLesbianInChair · 08/01/2020 13:49

Grin I’m getting faster but then I lose track & realise I’ve lost count!

Toughmonkeys · 08/01/2020 17:50

I've just found this thread. I can knit very basic and learnt as a child. I tought myself how to crochet 2 years ago and find it so much easier, especially when I have to stop regularly to see to my youngest who is autistic and needs a lot of support. I was supposed to crochet 3 blankets last year but only managed 1! It was a Christmas present and it was received well. I'm now working on a blanket for my daughter and braided scarf for a birthday present. I've just completed a velvet infinity scarf and twist headband which is lovely and warm.

I am just starting making Joey pouches for them CaptainMyCaptain :) I have so much spare material - just cut some out ready to sew in the next couple of days . It seems you can send them to somewhere in Devon who are co-ordination the donations .
waves at Chipping - flatterer ! Grin I have more time , now I am retired - I am ploughing on with squares for WH ..!

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/01/2020 21:11

I've also been making some crumb quilt squares for an organisation that gives quilts to young people leaving care. That's as well as the dress and knitted cardigan I'm making for myself.

TheWoollybacksWife · 08/01/2020 22:47

Thank you @ChippingIn I'm in a very similar position to book and I'm not distracted by work so I can crack on.

Top of my knitting superpower wishlish would be the ability to do random. I have six lovely colours for my next blanket and I'm sure random stripes would look great but it makes me twitch. I've used the random generator on Biscuits&Jam but end up fiddling with the outcome to make it look less random Blush

WhenDoISleep · 09/01/2020 16:19

Finally managed to complete my squares for the current WH blankets - I also wish I could knit faster, I use the drop and throw method and just don't feel comfortable using any other method despite trying.

Completed (2020):

  • squares for two current WH blankets

Ongoing projects:

  • Christmas themed cross stitch (2019 SAL)

Next projects to complete:

  • Christmas wreath (from 2018 Blush)
  • part finished Angel Hug
  • squares for Woolly Hugs Chernobyl project (no chance of completing a whole blanket now)

But before I can tackle anything else I have a stack of Beaver and Scout badges that are well overdue to be sewn onto various sweatshirts and shirts.

MissMoogle · 09/01/2020 18:28

Current projects of 2020: a crochet blanket using the left over matching yarn for the hat, gloves and scarf I made my mum for xmas, and a gryffindor colour scarf from year 3 up.

If I can find patterns there will be matching hats and gloves too.

AHobbyaweek · 10/01/2020 20:22

Just finished hats for DH, DD and myself for skiing next week and started a CAL with underground stitchers.
