I've though Mumsnet needed a "yarn group" rolling thread, and now I'm tired of thinking it so I'm doing it. Share your projects, ask for help, show us amazing new stitches you just learned or post your disasters for commiseration before frogging the whole thing!

First things first, do you knit, crochet or both? And because we all need to share the dirty laundry in our yarn bags...how many WIPs do you have going?

I've knitted for three years but crocheted for about 30. I've got:

-A knitted scarf for myself Scarf Pattern
-One knitted sock done for myself (but I hated the pattern so much I doubt I'll do the second one) I heavily modified a pattern and it didn't work out well.
-One knitted sock for DD (but I will finish those, they're just on the back burner) DD's Socks Pattern
-A half done crocheted scarf for my BIL (I'm going to finish that one on a plane next week) Not using a pattern...he wants super simple so that's what he's getting.
-And 1.5 of fingerless mitts that a friend asked me to make Fingerless Mitts Pattern

That's kind of sick and insane when I put it out there. I jump from piece to piece a lot. I'm at work (I know, I know) but I'll post a pic of the mitts when I get home. I'm feverishly trying to finish those.

@ThisBear the pattern for the caravan is from a gorgeous book I have called Let’s go camping by Kate Bruning, she uses playmobile people in the book but sylvanian families work too!
I have tried to attach the photo from the pattern will share my version when it’s done!

I haven't got WIPs; I've got PhDs, as in Projects half done. 'I'm working on my PhD' sounds much more impressive...

Knittedfairies · 11/12/2019 22:49

Ohh.. loving the caravan!

aplo · 11/12/2019 22:53

@Knittedfairies I love the PhD idea!

Knittedfairies · 11/12/2019 22:57

I knitted (although I think it should be knat) these fairies from a book I found in The Works - quite addictive...

I knit, sew and hook when I have to. Currently have the Sinister Catdigan as a sweater blocking, have two pairs for socks to be finished by Christmas including the Novita KAL, another Latvian Mitten and a Latvian Floral Cowl. For the last hour I have been sewing up a first sweater for a friend in my Saturday knitting group.

zucchinicourgette · 11/12/2019 23:00

I love that caravan! It makes me wish I could crochet, but I can’t and never will understand it.

I knit and I love making amigurumi. I like things that take a few hours and have lots of details. I also have a summer sweater on the go that I will probably never finish.

My most recent project is a turkey. Terrible picture sorry...

Ooh, me too please! I'm a hooker, cross-stitcher, and enthusiastic but ultimately failed knitter.

Current WIPs are an Alice in Wonderland cross stitch and a crocheted snowman tree decoration. But that's only a short list because there are so many I haven't quite started!

Long list includes a 2020 temperature blanket (thinking squares rather than stripes to keep on manageable), and most of Edward's Menagerie and Dogs. Plus I'd like to get back into the Woolly Hugs gang - generally my crafting is for the doing rather than the end product, so would be good to have someone to pass it on to.

Really must put down the wine glass and pick up the hook. But it's Christmas..

ThisBear · 11/12/2019 23:28

Oh I need to look up that book, that's adorable! Think of all the tiny caravanning adventures they could go on!

Love the knitted fairies and turkey. Admiring everyone's shaping on these bigger knitted creatures!

I'll see if I can get a picture of the swan I'm crocheting at the moment, but will wait until I've attached the head as it looks a bit unsettling without it Grin

WhatWouldJohnSay · 11/12/2019 23:30

Can I join?
A couple of years ago there was a great load of knitters and crocheters on here, seems to have gone quiet for some time though.
I knit and crochet since I was about 6. Im still searching for the perfect raglan sweater pattern 😉

ChristmasCroissant · 11/12/2019 23:34

Loving the Projects Half Done, I can knit but mostly crochet - like a PP never knitted anything in the round or on four needles.

I'm going to ignore the WIP question, not that many honest.

QueenOfOversharing · 11/12/2019 23:34

I knit, but have had a far too long hiatus from it. I cannot get on with crochet - it's like a mental block.

I was knitting a hat from a pattern I like, that I've knitted a few times, but I frogged it. Then I moved everything in my living room & need to dig out my stash & start something.

OP I looooooooooooove Madeline Tosh! I think I might have some of her yarn somewhere, if I haven't used it all. heart eyes

Myshitisreal · 11/12/2019 23:39

Posting, I shall return!!! 😁

flutterbean · 12/12/2019 01:38

I knit and crochet but have far too many wips 🙄 i have the bad habit of getting distracted half way through and starting something new!

All of these makes look amazing, arm knitting is definitely something i'd love to do, the really chunky wool always seems so expensive though!

DoubleNegativePanda · 12/12/2019 03:45

I'm so tired. Had a really long day at work, and then had stupidly volunteered to man the hot chocolate station at an outdoor holiday event which was so cold. I'm currently warming myself in bed with a cat on my feet and working on this glove.

I'm loving how many are joining, and so happy to see so many crocheters!

I'm not in the UK and always seem to be posting during your downtimes.

Marking my place as I'm up feeding 8mo so I will reread what I missed on my read through in the morning! I always miss things at 3am!

I knit and crochet, lots of projects on the go at the moment including the sleeves of my nakniswemo project 🙈 I'm waiting for shorter cables for my interchangeable needles to arrive for those though as I hate magic loop!

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 12/12/2019 09:01

We used to have the Hotel Crochetfornia here a good few years ago.... it just petered out eventually.

2020 is going to be the year when I only use yarn from my stash and don't buy any more...

WhenDoISleep · 12/12/2019 10:16

I mainly knit - I can crochet but it doesn't feel natural to me. I also cross-stitch. I have an enormous yarn stash and far too many UFOs.

Currently UFO list is:

  • squares for two current WH blankets
  • Christmas wreath (from 2018 Blush)
  • Christmas ornaments (from 2018 Blush)
  • Christmas bunting (from a 2018 KAL)
  • 2 part finished hedgehog toys for my DC
  • part finished Angel Hug (woolly Hugs)
  • toys for Woolly Hugs Christmas appeal (think I started these 3? years ago now)
  • random blanket (I started this 22yrs ago and it was packed in a box till I found it last summer - suspect it will go to Woolly Hugs when I finish it)
  • 2 small cross stitch samplers
  • 2 Christmas themed cross stitch (both were SALs - one from 2018, one from 2019)

I was quite good at not buying any more projects for the first part of the year but have recently succumbed and now have the following on my list:

  • 1 ball shawl (for me)
  • toy bee
  • reindeer hoodie (for DC2, for next Christmas)
  • wrap for me
  • Autumn themed cross-stitch (originally a SAL)
  • wool for Woolly Hugs Chernobyl project (was hoping to do a complete blanket, but squares are more likely I think now)

My issue is that I get bored with projects and new shiny things come along that catch my attention. I really should crack on with my squares for the current WH blankets, but I really want to progress one of the Christmas cross stitch projects I have. It would also be good to finish the Christmas wreath from last year - the irony is that the only thing left to do is the sewing together, I just can't seem to get round to doing it.

Knittedfairies · 12/12/2019 10:19

2020 is going to be the year when I only use yarn from my stash and don't buy any more.

Hahaha! I tried that last year, and made mitred square blankets with all the left-overs, except I had to buy more yarn to make the things look a bit more interesting. Another sort of circular knitting...

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 12/12/2019 10:22

Oh, 2019 and 2018 were also going to be "the year that I only use yarn from my stash"

As we are frequently told, it's the thought that counts.

Myshitisreal · 12/12/2019 10:47

Love reading about everyone's wips! Im a crocheter, self taught using you tube. I can knit very very badly so don't count that. I thought I could cross stitch until I bought a cross stitch card and never quite got off the ground 😂. I tend to Do one project at a time. My main accomplishments are blankets (as gifts as surprises), but I also crochet fingerless mittens (kind of made the pattern up, I've made so many pairs now I follow the same method and crochet in a never ending circle). I give those as gifts a lot as they are so quick to make if I'm in the zone. I've even given pairs to strangers who comment on my gloves 😂. I Crochet butterflies which are dead cute. My blankets all started as big squares but recently I've made a shell patterned one, a wavy stripe, and a granny stripe. I find i do better when there's less to concentrate on 😂.. I don't seem to be able to follow standard crochet patterns unless they're spelt out ans5 obvious obvious. I love attic 24, her tuturials are fabulous. I use her patterns to get started, then usually write my own shorthand notes on a postit. I don't know a lot of crocheters in real life 🤔. I tried a crochet group when I was first learning but anxiety got the better of me to be honest. So interesting to see others work and how they crochet or craft. At the minute I'm carrying Christmas wool to make Christmas projects. Last year I made a snowflake garland, its definitely homemade but I was proud. I made two as gifts actually. I'm kind of rambling now. Look forward to seeing everyone's work and learning the personalities. It's really nice to have a thread like this.

That hat is lovely, could you share the pattern 😊 I've never tried a hat and need to make a baby one

Owlypants · 12/12/2019 12:43

curioushandmade.com/freebobblehat/

If knitting for an adult I'd do a few extra stockinette rows and maybe a few extra at the start with the ribbing as they fit quite snug. If you like to fold up the bottom the band on these are a bit short
