Knitters and Crocheters: Post-Apocolyptic Life Skills Group Meets Here!

I've though Mumsnet needed a "yarn group" rolling thread, and now I'm tired of thinking it so I'm doing it. Share your projects, ask for help, show us amazing new stitches you just learned or post your disasters for commiseration before frogging the whole thing!

First things first, do you knit, crochet or both? And because we all need to share the dirty laundry in our yarn bags...how many WIPs do you have going?

I've knitted for three years but crocheted for about 30. I've got:

-A knitted scarf for myself Scarf Pattern
-One knitted sock done for myself (but I hated the pattern so much I doubt I'll do the second one) I heavily modified a pattern and it didn't work out well.
-One knitted sock for DD (but I will finish those, they're just on the back burner) DD's Socks Pattern
-A half done crocheted scarf for my BIL (I'm going to finish that one on a plane next week) Not using a pattern...he wants super simple so that's what he's getting.
-And 1.5 of fingerless mitts that a friend asked me to make Fingerless Mitts Pattern

That's kind of sick and insane when I put it out there. I jump from piece to piece a lot. I'm at work (I know, I know) but I'll post a pic of the mitts when I get home. I'm feverishly trying to finish those.

Hi all lovely to catch up and see some photos!

@hookiwooki 😂

Nothing wrong with a little confidence! 😉😊

@AHobbyaweek

That’s my wool bag after 20 minutes! I spend as much time untangling as I do crocheting!

@ACurlyWurly 😳 you’re clearly a natural!! A month in I was still mangling granny squares. I can’t believe how much you’ve achieved & hiwively your blanket is!

@Pipsqueak11 I think the thing I find helps to keep the edges straight is using a stitch marker at the end of each row or I find it easy to miss the last stitch off!

Mner2000 · 07/02/2020 18:37

Wow that all looks brilliant

The water bombs are progressing well - I am on number 3. DS loves them so much he has ordered 20! Lucky I started in February! Haha. Why have one project though when you can have 2... I am doing some hearts for valentines rather than a card that I can hang up each year.

I have caved already and bought a big bundle of wool from eBay as I didn’t have all the colours I wanted.

AHobbyaweek · 07/02/2020 20:25

More wool has arrived from the Hobbi sale and have an evening crocheting socks with my SIL tomorrow. All is right with the world.
People are work are requesting cacti for their desk after seeing mine. Smile

MissMoogle · 08/02/2020 14:30

Ordered more wool from lovecrafts this week, for my ravenclaw scarves. Really want to get started on another side project, maybe a hat to match the gryffindor scarf I'm working through but I cant find a pattern that looks easy enough.

A question for all our seasoned knitters though. What are the most common sized needles you find yourself using?

Rollerbird · 09/02/2020 23:26

Hi everyone
I've just started crochet and have done a baby hat (well, started about 10 times but ended up with one!)
I posted for ideas and have just started a baby cardigan
Will post pics tomorrow.
I love the cactus. ( @ahobbyaweek any pattern you can link?)
Also like the idea of the socks.

AHobbyaweek · 10/02/2020 10:52

Here is the cactus pattern link: crochet-kingdom.com/4-amazing-crochet-cactus-patterns/
There are 4 different ones

LittleMissnotLittleMrs · 18/02/2020 14:06

I just can’t knit! My tension is way too tight. It’s hard enough crocheting! I’m more a sew-er but started making a granny square blanket. That’s been a UFO for years. My WIP is and Edwards Menagerie Emma (bunny) but I thought I’d make is easier and go small. WTF?! Try knitting legs that are so small I can’t fit a pencil inside! I got my UFO out but my hook handle is SO sticky, I’m almost ready to give up!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 22/02/2020 11:30

Can I join in? I'm currently crocheting a weather blanket (but am.a bit behind thanks to a holiday), the Lost Souls shawl, and I finished this beanie before Christmas. I am a self taught crocheter and not very confident, but YouTube is really helpful. I like knitting but sometimes get a bit frustrated at how long it takes compared to crochet.

Hi, please can I join?

I crochet and knit, although my crochet is limited to stripes and granny square blankets, and I learned from YouTube.

I've recently learnt how to read knitting patterns (before it was basically variants if squares or rectangles), and am currently making a cable cardigan after my mum taught me cabling at Christmas. My next goal is to make my 2 year old some 70s cardigans from old patterns I found.

I was really hoping for some advice if possible? How do you knit in a way that doesn't hurt your shoulder? Is there a trick? Or is it just taking regular breaks? I am on the back of the cardi right now so lots of long rows which may impact it.

Thanks!

MissMoogle · 15/03/2020 01:20

@Katiet123 have you tried using circular needles? I find them great for knitting long rows.

JudyCoolibar · 18/03/2020 08:10

One of the unlooked-for benefits of potential self-isolation is that I might at last be able to make inroads into my list of unfinished crochet projects and my yarn stash.

SoupDragon · 18/03/2020 13:08

Anyone else planning to crochet a virus shawl once any lockdown hits?

TheWoollybacksWife · 18/03/2020 14:02

I wasn't...

AHobbyaweek · 18/03/2020 15:17

I have brought loads of supplies and getting really far on things. Benefits of not commuting and having an extra 3 hours a day.
Brought some micro crochet supplies to try!
Finished my massive coastal crochet CAL though.

SoupDragon · 18/03/2020 15:20

I haven't needed to buy any supplies and won't for some time... 😂

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/03/2020 16:06

I've ordered some yarn from Lovecrafts to knit a chunky cardigan when I've finished the Fair Isle jumper I'm knitting now.

AHobbyaweek · 18/03/2020 18:17

To be fair I probably didn't need to buy any either Blush

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/03/2020 10:20

Ordered on Monday, my yarn arrived via Hermes today. I still have a work in progress so I've quarantined the package in my car boot.

SoupDragon · 23/03/2020 19:48

Having been to the yarn shop gone into my loft, I've started my Virus shawl using this rainbow cotton yarn.

That wool is beautiful !!

bruffin · 25/03/2020 14:58

Ive started this for DD, its a Neville Longbottom cardigan from Harry Potter cardigan , she is at uni and away over the summer so it was going to be able to do it in secret etc so i could do it in secret and now we are in lockdown i had to tell her.

Ive hit a mental block how to integrate the extra stitches into the next pattern dont know why as ive managed fine up to now, just procrastinating really i thinkGrin

Well, Emma the bunny is ready for full body surgery! I’ve learnt my lesson. Cedric the crab is on 3mm hooks and gorgeous expensive wool and I’ve found my cro-jo again (well, if I could find the motivation to do it!)
