Knitters and Crocheters: Post-Apocolyptic Life Skills Group Meets Here!

I've though Mumsnet needed a "yarn group" rolling thread, and now I'm tired of thinking it so I'm doing it. Share your projects, ask for help, show us amazing new stitches you just learned or post your disasters for commiseration before frogging the whole thing!

First things first, do you knit, crochet or both? And because we all need to share the dirty laundry in our yarn bags...how many WIPs do you have going?

I've knitted for three years but crocheted for about 30. I've got:

-A knitted scarf for myself Scarf Pattern
-One knitted sock done for myself (but I hated the pattern so much I doubt I'll do the second one) I heavily modified a pattern and it didn't work out well.
-One knitted sock for DD (but I will finish those, they're just on the back burner) DD's Socks Pattern
-A half done crocheted scarf for my BIL (I'm going to finish that one on a plane next week) Not using a pattern...he wants super simple so that's what he's getting.
-And 1.5 of fingerless mitts that a friend asked me to make Fingerless Mitts Pattern

That's kind of sick and insane when I put it out there. I jump from piece to piece a lot. I'm at work (I know, I know) but I'll post a pic of the mitts when I get home. I'm feverishly trying to finish those.

@Myshitisreal sorry, i meant to @ you in that link before it's buried in the comments

DreamingofSunshine · 12/12/2019 13:07

I'm a keen crocheter and would like a knitting refresher session in 2020. Currently frantically crocheting a Toft nutcracker as a Christmas gift and then I must finish my Lottie and Albert blanket.

I've got the crochet camping book on my list to FC, fingers crossed!

DoubleNegativePanda · 12/12/2019 16:05

@myshitisreal love those blankets!

It's funny how some things just elude us. I tried for ages to crochet a slipper that started with the sole, done in increasing rounds. I never did figure that one out. It somehow always looked like a misshapen flipper.

I have my work Christmas do this evening. With an open bar. Must use caution!

I love the knitted fairies!

Melfish · 12/12/2019 16:19

I can't get on with crochet. Even my circular placemats end up looking like bowls/strange hat like creations. No matter how many stiches I add on the thing just won't lie flat!
I've got a shawl in progress as I'm trying to use the odds and ends of sock wool. I think it's the Reyna pattern. I didn't think it'd fit anything bigger than a doll as it starts so small, but as I approach row 100 it's starting to get too wide for my needles.

TheWoollybacksWife · 12/12/2019 16:47

I love seeing everyone else's projects.

Like DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn I have decided to only use yarn I already have in 2020. In preparation I have just ordered 300g of baby yarn to have "in stock" just in case. As long as it arrives by 31/12 it counts, right? 😂

Myshitisreal · 12/12/2019 17:21

@melfish I found this last night while looking up how to Do Christmas baubles. attic24.typepad.com/weblog/crocheting-a-flat-circle.html

Thank you I tried to post pics of more but it was erroring out

historyismything · 12/12/2019 18:01

Hi can I join?
I knit and crochet, not massively confident at each but I try to do some everyday. I'm currently knitting my last pair of socks for Christmas presents then I want to start the wild rabbit by Clare Garland.
The socks are knitted in drops fable

myshitisreal thanks for the link, I'll give it a try. I must say I like the different colours for each circle in that crochet pattern. It'd give me an excuse to buy even more yarn!! Your gloves are wonderful

However I must crack on with finishing one sock to make the pair and the shawl that keeps on giving. It's my new year's resolution to do a bit of embroidery and finally sew a top I've been hoarding for a while as I need to reduce my fabric stash. Am sure that if I get a viking burial I'll be surrounded by a huge pile of half done craft projects and a ton of wool and metre long pieces of fabric from the sale bins...

NotMeNoNo · 12/12/2019 19:10

Hi, I'm a long time knitter and can do a little crochet. I've got a few things on needles but seem to suffer a lot from mistakes, when I've made really complicated things in the past. I think family life is too distracting. I'm currently making the Purl Soho Reversible Cowl.

Notmenono, Purl Soho is my local yarn store Xmas Smile

followthestardis · 12/12/2019 21:45

am neither an active knitter or crocheter atm, but i just wanted to appreciate the cultivation of "post-apocalyptic life skills" Grin

when the spinners, weavers and yarn workers are the apex of technology once again, we'll rise :) (not calling to bring it on or owt, i sound like a prepper Blush)

Octothorpe · 12/12/2019 22:00

May I join too?

I'm a knitter of many years' standing, although there was a long hiatus when I didn't do much of it. I've got two main UFOs at the moment; a (very) long wrap/scarf in a sort of easy lace pattern, and a much more difficult lace shawl in Kidsilk Haze (very cobwebby mohair yarn). I need to finish both. I think I've got a sock hanging about somewhere too Xmas Grin. I do rather enjoy socks - I do them with the Magic Loop method these days, on a long circular needle.

I can crochet too, although I'm more of a natural knitter. And I sew a bit...clothes, and I'm always trying to prod myself into patchwork because I've got a terrifyingly large stash of fabric.

Sigh.

Love seeing what everyone is up to 😁😁 just knocked this out watching kirsties handmade Christmas. Didn't feel smug at all 😁 😂

Wolfiefan · 12/12/2019 23:21

Such lovely WIPs. Sneaking in for support as I attempt my first crochet blanket. Should also be finishing a sock and squares for Chernobs 2020. Blush

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 13/12/2019 07:12

I've got a terrifyingly large stash of fabric

I have one of those alongside my yarn stash. In fact, in the post-apocalyptic world, I'll be the one with all the craft supplies.

Bananajuice · 13/12/2019 07:19

Another crocheter here. Tried knitting but the wiggling of two sticks is apparently beyond my capabilities lol was recently a tester for the celestial bears blanket cal that will be starting in January and have made all sorts of things for Christmas recently. Has anyone else seen the new stylecraft cal?

Salvationiseasy · 13/12/2019 07:27

Aww I’ve always wanted to learn how to crochet, for some reason every time I try it just ends up in knots. Taught myself how to knit earlier this year using you tube, knitting a rabbit at the moment, just finished all my little projects. I had a baby in September and since then I find very little time to knit! I look forward to picking it up again in the future though. I love knitting!

Hello! I'm a knitter, have been pretty much all my life. Have tried crochet a few times but just can't get the hang of it. Think it's partly being left handed and partly being so used to knitting.

Currently trying to use up my stash of bits and pieces of scrap yarn making little preemie hats, blankets and stripey scarves.

QueenOfCatan · 13/12/2019 11:32

My smaller circulars arrived to finish my nakniswemo sleeves but I don't like using them, they're really awkward! So it looks like that sweater will be a phd for a long while as I tend to knit whilst feeding and holding the baby so I avoid using dpns where I can!

I cannot arm knit to save my life, I end up all tangled up.

I am also not buying new yarn, I've barely bought any in 3 years as I try to destash. It's very slow going though. I am allowed to buy to finish projects and I've bought a few bits in moments of weakness but I've not spent more than £25 on frivolous yarn purchases in 3 years. I still have well over 200 full balls of yarn, mostly stylecraft special dk and Debbie Bliss rialto dk.

aplo · 13/12/2019 13:03

I have just finished an adapted version of the caravan. I didn’t make the interior furniture this time as I had some sylvanian bits that fitted perfectly. I used plastic canvas to help keep the shape (strong cardboard is suggested in the book but I was afraid of it getting wet)

Really love this and can see myself making more!

Ooh, what a great idea!

I've been crocheting for about 15 years, and I do thread crochet as well. Trying to teach myself to tat, but it needs far more concentration than I can give it at the moment. I can't knit to save my life.

Current WIPS are:

6 monogrammed stockings, 4 complete and 2 half finished. These are my priority at the moment, and should be done by Sunday night.

WIP 2 is a granny square blanket for DS, to match the one I did for DD a few years ago.

WIP 3 is a cardigan for DD almost done, just needs button band, button hole band, peskies and buttons sewn.

WIP 4 is a wedding gift for a friend.

Then upcoming projects:

  1. Jumper for DS
  2. Rainbow cardigan for DD (she's asked for this)
  3. 3 children's ponchos

@PineappleDanish Lefty Hooker here. I follow right handed patterns and stitch instructions and hold my hook in my left. It's not caused me a problem in 15 years!

Knitting at a football semi-final game. Highschool football in small town texas, and the next step would be the state championship in Dallas. This is friday night lights on steroids!

Everybody's pictures look so good. My 2020 resolution is to only buy yarn for specific projects, not because it is a bargain. Also I think I might try to buy better quality yarn for things that I plan to use for years.

QueenOfOversharing · 14/12/2019 19:40

I'm going through a bad period with mental health, food/weight crap so I'm re-starting this hat project. Done 3 of them in past. (Not my pic)
