Making a fairy/angel for top of Christmas tree

I want to make a traditional fairy/angel for the top of our Christmas tree; I found a US craft supplier that sold heads and arms (was going to order this one), cones for bodies, and wings, but postage would have been ridiculous, and I can't find a UK supplier that does them. Can anyone help? I'd be quite happy with a small rigid plastic doll, but not getting anywhere with that either!

Would something like this be a suitable starting point? I'm renovating an existing angel topper (I think we may have already spoken about it on the Poncetastic thread) and have made the cone base from some rigid plastic stapled into shape and reinforced with masking tape.

Thanks Woollybacks I could probably do something with that - was it you that had created the gorgeous clothes? I couldn't find the Poncetastic thread yesterday.

I have made one using the cone technique mentioned above. I used a polystyrene ball from hobbeycraft for the head and some felted wool for the hair. The good thing about the polystyrene was when it came to the face I had a flash of inspiration and used some of my make up. So my angel is wearing Bobbi Brown Grin

She also has white feather wings. I love her.

I have made Christmas tree fairies for decades now- starting with a Kewpie doll wrapped in broderie anglais when I was 8( I am now in my sixties........) I've just had a pootle round ebay and this porcelain doll came up- I think she could look very pretty redressed. You could look for a butterfly deco for her wings.

@moreismore if I tried to make a polystyrene ball look like a face, it would be more horror movie than tree angel! But thanks for the advice. I'll get some feather wings, for sure.
@Threetoedsloth that's brilliant, thanks a lot, I've ordered one!
Apols for delayed responses, I've been away with poor WiFi.

I am so glad you liked her. Please post a photo of her when you've finished her. If you want any tips just shout and I'll try to help.

Thanks again, I will! I've got lots of scraps of ribbon and will look for bits of fabric.

Well I've done my fairy - she hasn't got a wand because her arms only move together and her cloak would get in the way but I'm quite pleased with her. A metre of ribbon and a scrap of gauze from a local shop cost me 60p, already had sparkly pipecleaners. Thanks again for help and advice!

Calling @TheWoollybacksWife, @moreismore and @Threetoedsloth to critique my fairy!

She's beautiful @Bloodybridget I love the lacy dress. Have you put your tree up yet? How does she look in situ?

Mine is still a work in progress. I spent ages trying to get the right fabric and now need to get some maribou trim which will eventually cover all the stitching on the skirt. I also need to make some sort of bodice as she's a bit indecent.

I'll either post a photo when I've finished or confess to buying a new topper.

Bloodybridget · 02/12/2019 17:33

Aw thanks Woollybacks ! Our tree's not going up until the end of next week, I hope the fairy can be fixed securely. Looking forward to seeing yours!

Aw she is gorgeous! Well done Smile

Threetoedsloth · 02/12/2019 22:06

Oh she is so pretty. I love her. Pipe cleaners are useful for attachment purposes.

Thanks moreismore and *Threetoedsloth! I am quite pleased with her - wouldn't have thought of trying if it weren't for MN!

I'm finished too! She's a bit fluffy and has a definite touch of the Princess Di's with her downward mournful look Grin
