What yarn and needle to use for a super large bulky blanket?

I want to cover my sofa with a huge thick blanket but it will obviously take a very, very long time if I use thinner yarn. Can anyone recommend cheap but decent quality yarn and needle size to knit a large, thick and comfortable blanket/throw over? Thank you.

Wool warehouse has a good selection of super chunky yarns - if you choose one, the details will tell you what size hook or needles you need.

Ravelry is a good place to look for patterns - if you go to advanced pattern search, you can narrow down your search to blankets, made with chunky yarn, and patterns that are available for free.

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius thank you so much for that. Very good and nice selection of yarn to choose from! I haven't heard of that website before. I am going to have a browse through it. I usually follow patterns on YouTube but this will be a change.

Start with the yarn. The label will tell you what size of needles you should use. If you are knitting a large throw or blanket i'd recommend a circular needle as cramming all of the stitches onto a straight needle can be a challenge.

Also, heavy yarn and large needles can be quite a workout and tiring on your hands and fingers.
