I'm new to sewing and just after any recommendations really to help me get to grips with the basics? Are their any books/you tube videos that other beginners have found useful in simplifying the art of sewing?

The stitch sisters on YouTube have a how to use a sewing machine series, which is decent. Sew over it have some how to vlogs, which are decent, too.

I like to keep a copy of the Readers Digest and DK guide to seeing near by. Both are great for explaining terms, and techniques. Old editions are fine as not much really changes in how to do things.

The dressmakers bible is excellent.

On YouTube, you could try Stitchless TV, Tree (short for Teresa I think) has some good beginner tutorials. From watching WithWendy, I made myself a lovely winter cape. Professor Pincushion is worth a look too. HTH.
