Crochet Beginner for Woolly Hug

SallyLockhartsDog · 21/02/2018 10:36

A thread to help me crochet a square for the Chernobyl woolly hug blankets! Anyone else want to join in for a good cause?

I have started by doing two YouTube tutorials by Bella Coco for a granny square but they don't look quite right.

Is a different type of square easier for a beginner?

TwitterQueen1 · 23/02/2018 16:31

Woohoo! Brilliant! well done Sally It's definitely addictive....

diamantegal · 23/02/2018 16:36

Congratulations! Now you just have to master the art of hiding your many wool orders from your DH... Grin

SallyLockhartsDog · 23/02/2018 16:59

Oh Diamante I am already terrible for fabric and craft stashes....poor DH. Although he has just bought an expensive camera - I really do need to even things out 😂

Sally as promised here is a crochet chart. I like these as they help me visualise the stitches. You can do as many 'half rows' as you need to make the square up to 6".

The little oval shapes are chain stitches - 1 oval = 1 chain and the symbol that looks like an elongated T with a bar through it is a treble (uk)

Arrggghh Sally. Wrong photo. Let me try again.

The first one doesn't start each row with a chain so is a little bit more difficult. Try the second one, though.

SallyLockhartsDog · 25/02/2018 12:28

Lovely - thank you! It is great having a visual to look at quickly. I am just trying not to get too far ahead of myself now Grin I have bookmarked about 5 different projects to start after my woolly hug squaresGrin!

Woolly how do you do a half row? I'm doing 16 rounds, which seems to make 12" very nicely, but I'm curious about this.

TheWoollybacksWife · 26/02/2018 10:27

TQ if you look at the chart above (the second one I posted) the half round is the one in brown.

So start a granny square as normal and work 2 rounds (shown in purple above)

Start a new colour in any corner. Chain 3 and work 2 trebles. I'd work 1 chain here but the pattern above doesn't seem to work chains in between clusters - just on the corners. Do whatever you do when working a granny square. Move to the next space between 2 clusters and work 3 trebles. Carry on working as you would for a normal granny square until you reach the next corner. Work a normal corner and then carry on until you reach the next corner. This should be diagonally opposite where you started your half row. Work 3 trebles only. Now make 3 chain and turn your work. Move to the next cluster and work as normal until you reach the corner. Work a normal corner and carry on until you have worked into the space before your '3 chain, 2 trebles' that you started the previous round with. Work 1 treble into the top of the 3 chain. Fasten off your yarn.

TwitterQueen1 · 26/02/2018 12:30

Thanks Woolly - so basically just adding a row to just half the square, not the whole square. Got it!

SallyLockhartsDog · 26/02/2018 14:37

TQ keep us updated with photos!

Thanks for the link Sally. There are some amazing colourways and patterns there! Here are my beginner squares - and a beanie. I'm pleased with the crochet ones, less so with the knitted ones, but I'm sure they'll be OK when they're put with others in a whole blanket.

I love your colours! I need to go back to the wool shop and top up - I've pretty much run out but there's no way I can stop now that I've got the hang of it.

Oh, gosh, I was going to start looking for a hat crochet pattern! And just like magic, I find this thread!

Thank you TQ!

It's so great when new crocheters come on board! Lovely to have all you Huggers!

VintageTeacup · 01/03/2018 19:02

Yay, I'm here, great thread.
I've been struggling to learn how to crochet so I'm hoping this thread will help. I once thought I was doing great until I looked down and saw that I had knitted a row with my finger and hook, I don't even know how that happened.

SallyDog · 02/03/2018 10:48

Grin I am addicted now vintage and can do a granny square without really thinking about it!!

I like the look of the hat pattern but worried I will mess it up Blush

Jux · 03/03/2018 19:30

Here's my first hat! The pattern says 14in but it's only 8in and dd says it's big enough, if not bordering on too big! Do you th8nk it's OK? I'm going to make an orange bobble (never done one before, and my two attempts so far have ended in disaster Grin ).

Thank you TQ1 for posting the pattern Star

Lovely Jux Star

SallyDog · 03/03/2018 20:38

OH wow Jux I am inspired Grin. How long did it take you?

Jux · 03/03/2018 21:11

It took a few hours over a couple of days - truth is, I wasn't keen on the colours (and I'm not sure they're Chernobyl/Candy colours, so thought I'd use them on Refugee). So as I didn't like the colours so much, and the pattern is a lot of htr I would get distracted and do other stuff......

I suspect it would take a real hooker much less time!

Jux · 03/03/2018 21:11

Oh, and I haven't done the peskies yet Grin
