Crochet Beginner for Woolly Hug

A thread to help me crochet a square for the Chernobyl woolly hug blankets! Anyone else want to join in for a good cause?

I have started by doing two YouTube tutorials by Bella Coco for a granny square but they don't look quite right.

Is a different type of square easier for a beginner?

I have started again 😂. I missed the last three trebles! Was trying to do it with DD next to me....

Trying to remain calm......(Send me cake!)

Second attempt...it looks as though half of it is inside out Confused

I give up till tomorrow...

This was the Bella Coco vid. I changed colours after each round. So instead of continuing into the next round, I'd slip stitch into the first stitch and cast off. Then join a new colour to a chain space and start from there - chain 3, two trebles to get first cluster and carry on as before.

Here it is! Not quite finished yet and there are one or two tiny mistakes (which I'm hoping won't matter too much) but this is what I managed to do yesterday afternoon!

Lovely TQ. Really nice colour combination - I have an appalling eye for colour so I really admire other people's choices.

TwitterQueen1 · 22/02/2018 10:46

Thanks woolly. The owner of the small, independent woolshop I went to told me that one day a woman came in and huffed and puffed very loudly about how the colours were so badly arranged. She then rearranged them all according to tones / palette - and I have to say she did a brilliant job! All I did was choose one of her colour combos (3 in each 'box'). Clearly she has a very good eye!

Twitter that is amazing!

Just put DS to bed, will have another attempt now...wish me luck!

Also - I am asking for a set of hooks for my birthday...any suggestions?

OP posts:
SallyLockhartsDog · 22/02/2018 18:57

I meant any suggestions on which hooks I should get! I'm not really a fan of the one I'm using...but don't know if it's just because I don't know what I'm doing!

I like my Clover Amour hook. I had a cheap set of metal hooks but they rubbed my fingers and got quite sore. I only have a 4mm CA hook - everything I do is in DK yarn so it's perfect.

bookbook · 22/02/2018 19:48

Same here as Drop - a clover armour , lovely to use.
Good luck tonight Sally - I agree with the Little Tin Bird photo tutorial - its good :)

Twitter - great looking square !

Fab have popped one in the Amazon basket Grin.

No hooking yet, the DC are taking it in turns to desperately need a drink/go for a wee/wake up crying.......

Tonights disaster...I'm not sure what is going so bloody wrong.

Do I need to try something more basic first? Any suggestions? As my morale can't take much more!!

I can sew, knit & bake - I promise I am not a complete failure 😂

Sally sorry you're having trouble. I'm no expert (ha ha - I have 24 hours experience...). I assume you're definitely going into the middle hole each time? and not the one created by the 3 chain stitches? So 3 trebles into the hole, followed by 3 chains, then another 3 trebles into the same hole?

diamantegal · 22/02/2018 23:52

It's hard to tell from the photo unfortunately. Are you near a wool shop at all? The one near my work runs classes - maybe you'd find it easier with someone showing you?

You will get there - I remember getting so frustrated and then it just suddenly clicked. It's just getting your head around that first round, then you'll be away.

DropZoneOne · 23/02/2018 02:39

Oh Sally, so sorry you're struggling. It looks to me like you're crocheting into the chain space rather than the centre circle.

I'm going to try posting pictures of the first couple of steps to see if it helps. If it's any consolation, getting this bit right took me about 2 weeks! I just couldn't see how my circle with bits hanging off it turned into a square.

Ok - this is the starting circle, then with the 3-chain, then with two trebles to make the first cluster. The 3rd pic has rotated - the circle is at the top and the cluster at the bottom.

Ok next steps.
Chain 3 - this is to make your corner
Treble into the centre circle - now you can see your centre circle to the bottom right and the corner space to the top
Another two trebles into the centre circle to make your second cluster - this is where I think you are doing trebles into the corner space instead, turning it inside out.

If you can get to that - a centre circle and two clusters, the repeat the chain 3 and 3xtrebles twice.

I tend to hold my centre circle between my thumb and forefinger of my left hand, so I'm guiding my hook into it. Just until I've built up a couple of rounds.

I hope that helps. I'm overseas at the mo so can't help in "real time".

Bugger the photos turned Confused

2nd pic - centre circle is at the top, corner space is to the right

3rd pic - centre circle is at the top, first cluster at the bottom, second cluster to the right, corner space is bottom right - I've pulled this into shape a bit so you can see the square starting to form.
