Sewers... help please!

I’m a fairly good machine sewer and make the odd item of clothing/adjust skirts etc, but I’m stuck on this!

My friend has given me a dog coat that fits her dog perfectly except for the bit in between his front legs which is too tight as he is quite broad chested. She wants an expansion panel putting in, but there’s no obvious seams to unpick or anything, so I’d literally be adding a panel of fabric directly in the middle of a piece of thick fleece, if that makes any sense? I just can’t work out where to start!

I’ve put a picture of a similar coat, and where the thick black line is, is where it needs making wider. Would really appreciate any pointers :)

How tight is it? Can he actually fit inside it for a fitting?

One idea woukd be to cut a vertical slit where it is tight (dead centre) and insert an oval shaped panel (oval but with tapered ends, so like the opposite to a dart). It could be the same colour or a contrasting one.

It might turn into one of those jobs where you have to make it up as you go along in parts!

Yes he fits in it but it’s too restrictive when he walks so it needs about an inch or two extra. I think I get what you mean, I just keep looking at it and I’m afraid to make any cuts in case I balls it up Grin
