I quite fancy a whole years worth of project. Any idea how? I was thinking ...

8 colours? Is that enough? How would I know how many of each to order? What colours?

I saw a completed one today, hold on and I'll see if I can find the explanation!

OhCarbyDay · 01/01/2018 15:04

Whoops. Too soon.

Also. What yarn? Stylecraft or shjeepies? What colours? Muted or brights? What stitch? How big? Details!!!!!

Cotton? I love cotton the best but can I blanket it?

here...it's from folks who live on a narrowboat!

Lovely temperature Blanket

OhCarbyDay · 01/01/2018 15:13

Oh that is a thing of beauty.

What an amazing idea! I can knit a little, do you think it would be complicated to do?

MsHomeSlice · 01/01/2018 15:20

isn't it lovely!

I can recommend King Cole cotton...it's nice and thick and soft....I am doing a Mystical Lanterns blanket, in different blues and cream.

I 'd start a temperature blanket too if i thought I'd get away with having another WIP about the place! maybe next year

Valerrie · 01/01/2018 15:22

Im doing a sky scarf. Similar but colour of the sky every day. Stylecraft DK for me!

Battyoldbat · 01/01/2018 15:26

They are fabulous! I could never be so disciplined to knit that much each day though, although I could probably get away with a temperature scarf!
I recommend wool warehouse for yarns, they are very reasonable and have plenty of choice

OhCarbyDay · 01/01/2018 15:32

I have 13 shades of Scheepjes in my basket.

But I’m going to need lots and lots of middle ones and much less of the extremes. Do I just chuck a couple extra in and order more later?

Do I do an average temp for each day? Or a high? Or lowest? Or a high and a low?

OP posts:
tribpot · 01/01/2018 15:56

You can choose whatever metric you like, but normally people do one temperature per day. Either the temperature at midday or the highest temp of the day, or whatever suits you as long as you're consistent! I would think it was best to do a reading you could do retrospectively so that you're not having to be at a place at a given time every day, so a site like this would be very helpful - you can see that gives me the high and low for each day in the month and city of my choosing.

You can't predict exactly how much yarn you're going to need (although you could use the Accuweather site to estimate how much of each shade you would have needed for last year and then use that as a basis) - if you go for a mainstream yarn you won't risk the colour being discontinued mid-year, or really need to worry about getting the same dye lot if you buy across the year.

Are you going to be able to keep up with the amount of knitting/crocheting a blanket will require with a row or two for every day of the year? It'll need to be wide enough to look proportionate when it's finished.

OhCarbyDay · 01/01/2018 16:00

I’m thinking I can check and revord the average temp every day at a certain time, then I can catch up on days I can binge crochet.

I tried to do this in, once. The main thing I think is to find a website that records a temperature for each day as you will forget to record it yourself and have to make one up. I did not do this and chose to use the temperature at 9am each day as given by my weather app or on my car thermometer depending where I was when I remembered to look!

The upshot is that I made it to the end of February (possibly March) and have a lovely small bag rather than the long scarf I was aiming for! :o

I think I allocated a different colour for each temperature range of about 4 degrees or so. I also put a back loop only ridge at the end of each month - this only works for crochet though I guess.

OhCarbyDay · 01/01/2018 18:06

Ooh. An end of month back loop ridge is a bloody fabulous idea.

I really want to do a temperature blanket but I’ve got far too many wips right now!
I do want to make a blanket for ds though so thought I might start one on his birthday in April and do a year of his life ready for his next birthday. Would love to see how you get on with yours.

OhCarbyDay · 02/01/2018 09:00

I have ordered my yarn!

I started one as a cross stitch project a couple of years ago. Gave up by September! I set a reminder on my phone to check the temperature every day at noon but it got tedious. A website which held the retrospective info would have been brilliant. Also I live in a part of the UK where the temps are generally quite mild, it rarely gets very cold and it rarely gets very hot. I did it with each colour covering 2 degrees but even so much of it was the same middle temp range and it was a bit dull! A lot of the ones I'd seen online were from places in the US etc with greater extremes of temp. Also using the noon temp meant I'd often "miss" a colder temp from the morning which might have given me a colder colour.

I crochet now and would love to revisit the idea but would need to plan differently to avoid the pitfalls above!

SoupDragon · 02/01/2018 13:20

One more thing I’ve remembered... the number of ends!

OhCarbyDay · 02/01/2018 13:28

Oh lord. 365 ends!!!! I must do them as I go. Once a week. Or month. NOT at the end.

OP posts:
tribpot · 02/01/2018 15:57

Depending on your temperature bands you may not have 365 ends, as some (many?) consecutive days will be in the same temperature band.

SoupDragon · 02/01/2018 17:11

Ah, but you have one at the start of a temperature band and one at the end. So, a maximum of 2 per day...

SoupDragon · 02/01/2018 17:12

This is why I have a small bag instead of a scarf!

OhCarbyDay · 30/12/2018 18:47

I’m back. Almost a whole year later and I have only one stripe left to do.

I’ll do a pic tomorrow when he is finished Grin

What a great idea!
