debbie bliss wool/cotton has been discontinued and I need it for a pattern - What could I substitute?

Hello, I am quite new to this knitting lark and so far I have managed to make three baby hats and a little baby cardigan [proud!].

I tried to make the bootees from the debbie bliss book 'baby knits for beginners' and it says to use debbie bliss wool/cotton. So I went to John Lewis and the assistant said that 'wool/cotton' meant you could either use wool or cotton so I bought cotton, and knitted to the pattern and it is far too big! I have since worked out what tension means...

Anyway, I have tried to buy wool/cotton online but it appears to have been discontinued, what would work instead? It has a tension of 28 sts 46 rows to 10cm.

Thank you very much for reading this,
BellaBear

Aha! Success! I bought some Rowan wool cotton and made one bootee - very successful and half the length of the last one! Will make the other soon, thanks everyone for all your advice, much appreciated.

For future ref. Debbie bliss baby cashmerino is exactly the same tension as the discontinued wool/cotton, and Rowan Cotton Glace is not bad either. Not a lot else is a direct sub as both fall between standard DK & 4 ply so other yarns will be a bit of a compromise. I love Rowan wool cotton DK though so if you are getting a good result, good luck!

Glad it worked out BellaBear

NQC - actually, it's just that I love knitting in the Rowan Wool/Cotton so much that I just tend to knit everything possible in it, and just hope the sizes turn out ok

Oooh Viticella, baby cashmerino is gorgeous to knit in too. I hadn't realised it was the same weight as the Rowan Wool/Cotton. That's worth knowing. Thanks. [wmile]

Noooo.... Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino is the same weight as Debbie Bliss Wool/Cotton (discontinued).

Rowan wool cotton is thicker than both, it's a DK weight. (Although I guess a tight knitter might get it to be similar). Completely different yarn.

I've knitted in all three, can vouch for this. Sorry to be such a yarn geek!
