I thought it would be nice this hols to make some things for dd's room together.I like hearts and have them all over the house , well bathroom and girls bedrooms.

Im an old arty farty , but havent done much for ages. I used to use expensive meshes or even plaster to then cover over and mould things at uni, but what can I use as the bulk of the hearts to then cover in papier mache? I thought may be just scrunched newspaper, but will take some shaping after?

Im off to hobbycraft tommorow to get big tubs of acrylic and things to decorate them with, gonna cost a small fortune !!!

What a lovely idea (I used to love making things too)
Newspaper could work? 2 sheets rolled into scrunchy tubes then roll each into a snail/comma shape & sellotape/glue them together with papier mache over the top. You could make cardboard templates to stick them on if you want a very flat back/front and build upwith more "commas" if you wanted them more rounded.

bend a strip of card into a heart shape and stuff with scrunched up paper? It'll need some tape and a flat piece of card as the base.

I@ve added the DSs' first effort into my profile. It's actually 4 small canvasses stuck together. I'm going to put them up with a gap in between them Further attempts will be done in the garden not the kitchen!

BabyDragon was in her highchair eating lunch God knows what she would have looked like ... DSs had a fab time. DS2 had done it at school a week or so before and the whole of Y1 had sooo much fun.

Photos were done before my children got covered in paint

Scrunched up newspaper is fine, BUT better if inside an old tight or stocking. V easy to mould or shape and then paper maiche over top.

Or, use corrugated card.

  1. Cut out heart shape.
  2. cut strip of card long enough to fit around heart shape. You may nedd more than one piece. Make sure corrugated ridges are running horizontally across strip.
  3. work card strip over edge of table to make it malleable (Just rolling it will do sometimes)
  4. Using masking tape, or gummed tape, place edge of strip edege to edge with heart shape. Small pices of tape over front and back join. It is better to use lots of little overlapping pieces rather than one strip. ) Put a back on in similar method. Leave flat, or mould out with bits of newspaper for a more 3D effect. Cover in papier maiche.

I am an Art teacher BTW, and am very used to 3D stuff in any found materials. The tights thing is brilliant. I hate teaching 3D, but the kids go wild for it!!
