Butterick patterns cutting for larger sizes

Hi,

I am a complete beginner to sewing and have bought a Butterick pattern, B5466. According to the envelope I should make a size 20 but the tissue paper only shows sizes BB 8 to 14. Sorry to ask a probably very obvious question but how do I cut out the correct size pattern pieces ? I've looked online but can't seem to find the answer!

You have bought the wrong one . They split the sizes between two envelopes so the pattern you bought and then the 16-24 sizes (envelope label F5 instead of BB).

Can you take it back and swap it??

Yes, I agree. You'll need to buy the pattern in the right size. I nearly did the same mistake myself just the other day.

Also, you don't cut in the pattern itself but you transfer the pattern pieces to a semi-transparent paper and then cut in that. But you did know this, didn't you?

Don't forget to measure the pattern vs. yourself (or ask someone to assist) so the pattern will fit, sometimes you need to 'tweak' the pattern. You do this before you cut the cloth.

You might want to sew in some cheap cloth (such as the cheap cloth you can buy at IKEA) just to see if the pattern fits, before you cut in your expensive cloth.

Oh thank you both, sadly I'm actually relieved it is something as simple as that and not me being a total wally !! 😊 (Just a half wally !) . I'll take the pattern back next Saturday and get one more suitable for my child bearing hips !! I have some cheap material to do a practise run in so no doubt I will be asking more daft questions shortly .... 😊

If your nervous starting, try very easy vogue patterns, they are brilliant at explaining everything in detail.

If you want to use easy patterns, you could look for the magazine Burda Easy. Burda is a well established pattern company of German origin. I just found their UK web page there's lots of fun things there to check out... they even sell sewing machines, of the make Janome, which is what I have now.

In any case don't forget to measure around the hips and measure against the pattern. You don't have to, indeed should not, wait "trying it on" until you have the finished product. You just measure e.g. how broad the pattern is against the hips (usually you get half of the e.g. front side from the pattern and double it) and measure it against your body. That way you know you won't make it too small (or indeed too big but that is less of a problem for obvious reasons).

I hope that you managed to swap your pattern BoneyM. I'm pretty sure that I've sewn a couple of those skirts, it is a really good basic wardrobe builder pattern.
I never transfer the pattern as there is no to need on this one, some multi patterns (like Burda) do need tracing.
