it looks too...thick...to be knitted really

it looks like cable to me (plain old knit/purl?). i don't knit as much as i crochet so i have a good eye for something that is not crochet.

Yes, defiinitely knited but I don't know what the pattern is- some kind of chevron lace?

It looks a little like mistake rib stitch to me? in a really chunky yarn?
