Crochet Beginner - can you look at my pic and tell me what I've done wrong?

I'm starting my second ever granny square (loving it).
However for the second time I can see I've messed up when switching colours.
The video I'm watching talks about grabbing the third (last in this case) chain loop once you've completed your round before adding in the new colour. I can see you're supposed to end up with two loops from the chain on your needle, before pulling through the new yarn but cannot figure out at all how you identify which is the correct chain or how to grab it correctly. Hence my dud red stitch sticking out like a sore thumb in the pic!
I need to see a close up of the stitch and a diagram or something of how to grab it. Can anyone help me? Or find me a link where this is explained? I've undone it so many times and can't get it right and I'm fed up googling!

I am fairly new to crochet myself so maybe not the best person but I am not sure your first round is correct. The bit on the left looks like you have too many treble crochet? To change colour finish off the first colour by making a loop, pulling the thread through the loop and cutting. Then I just tie my new colour round one of the spaces then pull the thread through and do three chain stitches. I use the Bella Coco tutorials. They are really easy to follow.

I have taken a picture of the steps I use to change colours. The thread is at the bottom not the top like yours.

Not sure about the tutorial you are using, but the usual way for a multi-coloured square is just to start the new colour in one of the corner gaps of the previous round (where you did your chain between your double crochets). I wouldn't personally crochet into the chain stitch, just slip stitch through the gap then chain 3, then do 2 more dcs, then carry on with your round. If you aren't changing colours, you join your round by making a slip stitch into the top of your very first chain 3, then chain 3 up, then squish in 2 more dcs at the bottom of that chain 3, and off you go on your next round. It looks like you've just looped it round, and not through? Argh it's so hard to tell without someone actually next to you showing you sometimes!
I've finished the round so maybe clearer now where I've gone wrong.

You've gone into the first stitch of the left hand cluster. U should have gone into the chain space

Also try to pull on the top of the white cluster it looks as though there isn't quite enough room for it. If u pull it it might create a bit more space there and may look better

Oh I've seen what you've done. U attached ur red in the stitch of the cluster instead of the chain space

So the crafty link says to complete it with a slip stitch and then just add in the new colour to any corner - but how?! Is it as simple as that? Which bit do I grab? The outer chain? In between or around?

Follow this ladies method. Attach in any chain space u like. I would recommend not starting on a corner round tho

This tutorial is for a single colour square but uses a different method - maybe this is the approach your video is using which therefore needs you to grab the 3rd chain to close the loop? attic24.typepad.com/weblog/solid-granny-square.html
Lucy uses UK terminology so she says treble crochet where others say double. She starts her square with a little chain ring (so it has a bigger centre than the one in the Craftsy blog). Then to start her first proper round she chains 5, which is a 'stitch' plus a corner space. So when you come back around to the start you finish with 2 crochet stitches and you need to join into the 3rd chain (so that the corner space is left open). She has a pretty good picture with a needle showing exactly which point you are joining into!

You might find it easier to cut your new colour as opposed to keeping it threaded like some crochet people do. I find it much easier to just add a new colour in a gap with slip stitches.

I know you are telling me to drop this method but I just really want to suss it out, it's annoying me!

That should be fine. Then i would pull the wool through, make a big loop and cut a few inches of yarn. Then poke that bit through to tie off. Get the next colour and tie into the space between one of the treble crochet groups, pull the wool through and do the three chain stitches to stat the next round.

There is no point making it more complicated than it needs to be. I am a beginner too and am making this blanket using the tie off and start new colour method. It is very simple.

bluesky, what yarn are you using for that blanket? It is lovely.

I am in the middle of crocheting a similar blanket but all in the same colour. Would love to do a multicolour one next.

It is Stylecraft Special DK in Raspberry, Plum, Claret with Parchment as the pale accent. I am very pleased with how it looks.
