Making eyelets

I've always had a problem making eyelets - it's the hitting it with a hammer bit

Has anyone found a good system? That works consistently?

Is it a set with the little plastic and metal tool to hold it in place while you hammer?

What are you setting them into? There's a tool called a cropadile that says eyelets for papercrafting. I dont know what size you need.

It's for material dressmaking and curtains - I have tried lots of makes/sizes but I'm just not getting it

I haven't used eyelets for a while but had best results with a thin piece of wood under the eyelet tool, on top of a concrete step. You need a solid surface without too much give.

What problems are you having?

I can't hit straight

They are off centre - not even (esp the big 2 inch ones for curtains) & come out
