how can I find out how much yardage a vintage yarn had? Google isn't helping...

I have a gorgeous pattern and need to (obviously) substitute the yarn as the one it calls for isn't made any more.

It needed Patons Beehive Pearl 2ply or Patons Beehive Lady Betty 3ply... I just can't find out how much yardage these had as the pattern says 5 balls and I don't know how much to order!

Help please!

What are you making baby hat or size 32 jumper? Most wool is 50 or 100g I would be tempted to get 5x 100. Or go to a local shop and then buy 3 to get going. It is annoying though when you have to buy online.

The beehive 3ply is listed as 189m on ravelry , it doesn't say lady Betty though

it's going to be a circular baby shawl - 50inch wide It's going to be my biggest knitting project so far, but I'm up for a challenge - the pattern seems fairly simple!

That's 189m per ounce, btw, so you'd need to look for yarn that's about 350-375m per 50g, which is a heavy lace weight, almost, or a fine sock yarn.

Sen it described in Mericanese as light fingering :o

If it's a shawl, gauge is less important. I'd use a heavy laceweight and order about 900-1000m of it.

I think it's going to be a very open knit - it calls for a 3ply wool on 5.5mm needles!

I'll have to use 5s though, as I only have round numbers
