rowan pattern?

I'm just starting a pattern for a kidsilk haze pattern in the echoes book. The pattern says cast on 56 sts and yarn double......
Do they mean cast the sts on as a double stitch cast on.

No, I think you need to have the thread double, so the cast on is a bit heavier than the knitting. Use two balls together or the thread from the inside of the ball as well as the outside.
