You don't make the basic thing (like a jar/plate) but you add things to it?

I think you can if you refer to the Handmade item on/in it.

For Example, a jar of jam. It's sold in a jar which you've probably bought, but if you have made the jam yourself, you can call the entire item 'Homemade Jam', as the buyer is purchasing the jam rather than the jar.

But adding other items to a plate or jar etc, I would refer to as hand decorated.
