painting a wooden dolls house

we have a plain wood dolls house that's looking a bit tatty and i reckon we should paint it to spruce it up a bit. it's unfinished wood - what kind of paint should we use? could we use bits and pieces of emulsion we've got lying around, or does it need to be some kind of gloss/wood-specific paint?

it's not a fancy one - was dead cheapo and i think it'll look much better painted (it's been scribbled on a bit ). i thought about model makers paints and i'm wondering whether they might be a good bet for doing all the furniture (also plain wood), but a bit expensive to paint the whole house in...
