The best machine I've come across for heavy duty sewing is my lovely Singer 201, built in 1937! It was designed as semi-industrial (for women taking in sewing for the income), they used to do demonstrations by sewing sheets of aluminium together... and there are plenty around on ebay/gumtree. It only does straight stitch, but it does that way better than most cheap modern models (I have one of those as well for zigzag stitch etc, but it will only work on light fabrics).
