Would you do this in Strips or individual Tied bits - pics inside of basket

I've got a basket on the back of my bike needing a refurb. I have an old Kidston oilcloth I love that went a bit gammy when I left it outside last year.

I could either interweave strips along the basket - not sure how I would 'tie' the ends.

Or I could do each hole individually like a rag rug.

What do you think?

Depends on what you are trying to achieve. Are you looking for something that is showerproof or just pretty? Are you trying to cover up the basket or not?

Can you sew?

I can't imagine how the rag rug thing would work with such a big mesh. You would have to sew or stick the ends of the woven bits wouldn't you? Or maybe use coloured poppers on each end if you have the kit/tools to do that.

If it were mine I would sew either a liner bag thing with a flap or a cover.

I bought some really pretty floral waterproof ripstop this week and made a cycle helmet cover - have no idea what to do with the rest of the metre (I only used about a foot square if that). I thought bike bags but we all have panniers and I have a basil lined wire basket. To make it worse I bought two lots, DD decided that the first lot was just a bit too 'hippy' Mum and I relented and decided not to inflict my sense of 'fun' on her.

I want just prettiness. Theres too much white covering removed from the bars to just do a liner. I've done the top, still thinking about tying strips to all four corners of a 'hole'.

This heart I did was just as Gappy as the basket, maybe I'd need to do 6 strips per hole?

I just tied the strips in a knot on that heart

It's not the easiest option but I would make a removable liner to fit inside the basket.

I would do the same as SoupDragon. You could rub the wire bits down where it is flaking off and use white spray Hammerite/Smoothrite to tidy it up.

The other reason for doing it is that the oilcloth is faded in parts and that's not obvious when it's in strips
