Altering a dress skirt into culottes - what are the chances?

I have a dress that doesn't get much wear as is, so have been considering trying to convert it to a culotte-leg jumpsuit......Not being able to find much info online about the process, I am guessing it is not as straightforward as first appears (cut in centre and shape/sew into 'legs'?). While I can sew basics, I'm not overly experienced in dressmaking......any avid sewists out there who have undertaken a similar project and can advise: am I being too ambitious to even attempt this? Is it likely I will end up with a ruined dress and no all-in-one?

I don't think it will work.

You need more fabric for culottes than a skirt for example.

This looks like a quick and easy way to make culottes

I used this method -- which I like:
