General Knitting Thread - And Photos of a Finished Project!

Ok, I've finally uploaded good pics of the blanket I just finished. The blanket took forever and is bloody huge, for a project in 4-ply.

Pictures are Here .

I'm working on a hat that looks a fair bit like an ice cream cone, for complicated reasons, for a baby who was probably born yesterday or today.

Thank you! I'm not totally fond of the colour combination, but then again, I'm sick of the whole thing.

I do like the border, though, that came out well.

NQC It is absolutely beautiful!!!

alphonsa · 19/10/2006 19:28

It is absolutely gorgeous! You are very talented

I have to confess (ahem) that as a new MNer and a recent knitting convert I've been lurking on these threads... So far I've been inspired to try my hand at felting (completed a bag for my SIL for Christmas) and am now working on a cardi for a friend's baby. Only problem is that it involves stripes and I've no idea what to do when I switch colours.... knot them together? cut the wool or just pick it up later? Any help gratefully received

corrina28 · 19/10/2006 19:52

At last fellow knitters!! the blanket is beautiful. i know lots of pregnant people at the moment and have lots of knitting projects on the go, including pink loopy pram set.

bctmum · 19/10/2006 19:57

NQC - it's lovely - you're really talented

fishie · 19/10/2006 20:01

that is just lovely, you must be so pleased with it. how big is it then?

bran · 19/10/2006 20:28

It's gorgeous, and I like the colour combination very much, it looks quite nordic and suits the pattern very well.

NotQuiteCockney · 20/10/2006 07:04

I'll have to measure it before I post it. It's not that big, except it's 4ply, so it took forever.

alphonsa, how many rows are there per stripe? Is the cardi in just two colours? You can leave tails running for a few rows, so you end up with less sewing in to do, or you can cut the yarn and sew it in. I wouldn't knot things together, but then I never knot things when knitting ...

Oh, one interesting detail about the blanket - it was done all in one piece, no sewing at all.

Measured - 25" by 30", which is a reasonable size for a baby blanket, I think.

I started knitting close to two years ago, so not long, really, no.

I'm glad you liked it, I had best post it and hope my sister likes it too!

NQC, my how it's grown! It looks superb - although fellow admirers take note, I know what NQC means about the colours because they have photographed slightly better than they look in RL.
It is fabulous just the same!

alphonsa · 20/10/2006 13:26

NQC, it's only two colours per stripe, in three different colours so I may be able to get away with "leaving tails running"... probably going to drive me mad but I think my friend will love it so am going to persevere.

Am extremely impressed that you've only been knitting for two years - I'm still v cack handed after six months.

marz · 20/10/2006 13:31

wow! I love the blamket.
Did any of you go to Ally Pally last week?
It was absolutely amazing....

marz · 20/10/2006 13:31

I think I meant blanket....!

I'm always very impressed by knitters. It is something I want to learn. Great blanket NQC!

florenceuk · 20/10/2006 20:03

That's a fantastic blanket - really lovely.

NotQuiteCockney · 20/10/2006 20:05

Pruni, it's Mosaic knitting. Good old Barbara G. is a fan.

It's a really lovely way to do multi-colour work, without the tons of working threads thing that you get with intarsia, and without needing to be able to work with more than one thread at a time (fairisle). It's basically a lot of two-row stripes and a lot of slipped stitches.

Oh, and the ice cream cone hat is going well, which is good, as the baby was born on Wednesday night. Must push on with it.

MrsBadger · 20/10/2006 21:49

ooh, NQC, fab blanket!

may I hijack and ask if there are photographs available anywhere of the most recent MN communal blanket?
Is my own fault for having three weeks off [hangs head in shame] but I think I may have missed seeing the chance of seeing the finished item after the September sew-up...

NotQuiteCockney · 20/10/2006 23:21

Oh, hello MrsB, where were you? I haven't seen you about for ages.

I don't know what happened with pictures, I think they were meant to be appearing soon. I can tell you, though, it's pretty impressive and absolutely huge. (Hence sewing up taking quite a while!)

working madly and gallivanting round Asia (not at the same time) - is nice to be back!
