Knitting machine beginner

I'm a reasonably keen knitter: although generally stick to small projects for portability reasons. My DM has recently reminded me that when my DGM died nearly 20 years ago DM kept DGM's old knitting machine and its in the loft if I want to give it a try.

Has anyone used one? Are they really difficult to control, or is it fairly intuative?

Basically, if I go to the bother of setting it up and getting appropriate yarn (on cones?) is it going to be a decent way of making myself/the toddler cardis/jumpers?

It will probably have dried out and will be in need of a service. I've just been on a knitting course at Metropolitan in Cheshire and took along my machine that hasn't been used for nearly 20 years.

A morning of tlc and it was running like a dream. It just needed a new sponge bar and a lot of oiling.
