Team Hooker, now with added pictures :)

Whilst on holiday recently, I finished a hat and started a blanket. The blanket will have at least 200 4" squares in the end so I have a little way to go!

PVA sounds like a good idea. Please post again and let me know if it works.

More progress in the Pile O Squares!

Those snowflakes are gorgeous, aJumpedUp - I hope one day I can crochet well enough to make some myself.

FolknNorah · 31/08/2014 09:27

Oh wow such beautiful things.
Those snowflakes would also be lovely hung at the window at Christmas time I think?
Your blanket is amazing owl how big is it?
sdtg how big are your squares? They look really neat and square how do you do that? I've tried making them and they end up round and bowl shaped. I used the pattern in (yep you guessed it) attic24.
Has anyone seen the app for different granny squares? It's a free download which is good. I like free

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/08/2014 13:00

The squares are 20cm square, FolknNorah - and to be honest, they do curl up a bit at the corners - I squashed them down flat before I took the photo! I used a youtube tutorial to learn how to do them, but I can't remember which one now, I'm afraid.

The pattern I use is this (I am doing it from memory, so apologies if it doesn't make total sense - hopefully it will be OK):

Round 1 - chain 4 and join into a loop with a slip stitch.

Round 2 - chain 2 (counts as first treble), do two trebles, chain 2, three trebles, (three trebles, chain two, three trebles) three times, chain two and join to top of first chain 2 with slip stitch.

Round 3 - slip stitch into the top chains at the top of your first set of three trebles, then slip stitch into the corner chain space. Chain 2, then do 2 trebles, chain two, three trebles, do three trebles in chain space on the side of your square, then three trebles, chain 2, three trebles in the next corner space - do this all the way round.

From then on, you do the same join at the corner, slip stitches to get you to the corner space, trebles, chain 2, trebles in each corner, trebles in each chain space along the sides, and join up when you get to where you started.

Does that make sense? I hope so!

I've just finished this cardigan for 4yo dd2. It's my first attempt at clothing and I had to adapt the pattern because I bought dk wool instead of Aran. Blush Dd2 loves it.

MehsMum · 31/08/2014 19:42

Wow, Dragon. I've never dared crochet any clothes except socks...

Love aJumped's snowflakes; I made a few gold ones a month or two back will look out for advice on stiffening them.

Am also planning my next blanket - it will be a ripple, I think...

There is a fab tutorial for crochet squares at
gingerschatz.blogspot.co.uk/2010/03/solid-crochet-square.html
It's idiot-proof (it worked for me Grin)

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 31/08/2014 19:45

Dragon that's stunning. She's a lucky girl.

Norah, if your grannies are bowl shaped it sounds as if you are forgetting to put the corners in.
I run a crochet club in school and thats the most common error Smile

Dragonlette · 31/08/2014 20:40

Thanks, Im really proud of it, but I'm not convinced it hangs properly when it's on. I think I need to change the position of the buttons. It's gone down well enough that my 6yo niece has requested one the same but in different colours, and bigger obviously.

I love seeing other people's gorgeous creations, I'm always on the lookout for something new to try. I've stuck to baby/child blankets mostly so far because they're easy. I did some hats and scarves last year for the Christmas shoebox appeal at school and then I saw the pattern for that cardigan and had to give it a go.

Lifesalemon · 31/08/2014 21:53

It's gorgeous dragon ,lovely colours.
What colours do you have planned for the second one?

Lifesalemon · 31/08/2014 22:00

I'm not very good with colours. The blankets, cushions and the bag above are all so nice but i have no imagination and end up copying the colours on whatever pattern I'm using. Even in a yarn shop with lots of choice I can never pick out colours and shades and think in my head what it will look like.

Dragonlette · 31/08/2014 22:04

She asked for red and yellow Life, so that's what she will get. The main colour will be red and the flashes on the skirt will be yellow.

AuntySib · 31/08/2014 22:05

Wow, there are some fantastic pieces on here!
I'm fairly new to crochetand have made a couple of baby blankets using concentric squares of triple.
I'm now progressing to granny squares but am having trouble joining them. Have double stitched a few together but don't like the effect. I see some of you use a join as you go technique, but not sure what that is and how it works. Could anyone explain please? Or if you have any other way of joining that is easy perhaps you could explain that?
My fallback position will be to slipstitch them together - but would I need to do a row or 2 of GB foundation edging first?
Am currently in meltrdown so any advice would be very gratefully received!!

FolknNorah · 31/08/2014 22:18

Yes, it actually did make sense Shock I must be getting better Grin thanks sdtg
I was definitely putting in corner bits, because I checked, checked and checked again. I ended up adding an extra chain which helped a lot. I'll look out for that in the future though thank you.
Is that the 'eloise'? I have that on my list for dd. How did you find it? One of the things putting me off right now is that it is in US not UK I think? That and I'm only on stripes etc ATM. Grin

Dragonlette · 31/08/2014 22:52

It is the Eloise Folk. It was easy enough, the most complicated bit was crocheting in back loops only, but yes it is American so when she says dc I needed to remember that I need to do an English tc. And worsted weight yarn is actually Aran and not double knitting, that seems to make quite a big difference. I can't say how the sizes would measure up if you were using the right wool because I wasn't and I ended up bodging together the patterns for the various different sizes because I started off using the age 4/6 pattern, then realised that I'd got the wrong wool and it wouldn't go round dd2 if I stopped when I was supposed to, so I ended up 'adapting' the pattern as I went and making dd2 try it on regularly so I could tell if it was the right size for her, that was a pita. Now I've done it though, I feel a lot more confident that I can make one for my niece without all that, I'll still be using dk wool but I'll follow the pattern for 12/14 and just make it a bit wider because dn is a little chunkier than dd2.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/08/2014 23:23

This is an attempt at a photo tutorial for the single crochet join.

Insert hook through tops of stitches, with squares wrong side together. Pull through a loop and slip stitch to fasten.

Going through tops of subsequent stitches, using single crochet, work along join.

This is what the join should look like:

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/08/2014 23:29

I have photoed them flat, but it is best done with the squares wrong side together.

OwlCapone · 01/09/2014 07:40

If you don't want a raised seam on the top of the squares, Attic24's tutorial is good for joining squares. It's the method I've used the most although I have tried "join as you go" but didn't like it and have also done the way SDTG describes.

I am probably about 120 squares into my 200 square spotty blanket but I've just remembered there's a complicated Woolly Hug square I'm meant to be making so I'll have to halt production!

Loving all the new pictures!

I've just started crocheting so bear with me - I'm addicted though. I've been doing it all week! So far I've made loads of holly leaves, snowballs, roses, ivy, mistletoe and stars to go on an attic24 style Christmas wreath, pretty pink and purple may roses to go on another wreath for my Mum for Christmas, six sparkly snowflakes (the reason I learned to crochet - saw them on pinterest and fell in love), two beanies (they came out terribly so will keep for me) and I'm starting on fingerless gloves for my sister. I go back to work after mat leave next week - I think my hobby has come too late!!

why thank you Owl

Sirzy · 03/09/2014 16:48

That's much better than my first beanie effort today

FolknNorah · 04/09/2014 09:46

Morning! Just dashing through to show you my latest cushion cover Grin
Also, for my first blanket/throw what would you recommend? Ripple, vintage stripe, granny stripes, raindrops? Or is it possible (easy) to do all of them in one blanket? How can I work out the yarn amount needed if I was to use chunky or Aran instead of dk?
