No problem Nanou. Personally I knit German-style (started out English, though), so I have an interest in the different types.

Oh, it maybe wasn't clear, the Norwegians etc knit German-style, not English.

Nanou1 · 12/09/2006 11:19

maybe i should try that way .... i seem very slow to knit and the thread does not slide off my finger properly / i dont give the thread a consistent tension . do i make sense here?!

NotQuiteCockney · 12/09/2006 11:37

Yes, when I knitted English-style, I struggled with tension, and dropped the yarn a lot.

If you're not fast at English-style, it might be worth trying German. It is better for people who are reasonably ambi-dextrous, imo.

(Oh, je parle francais aussi, mais je n'ecris pas en francais generalement. J'ai une amie belge qui tricote, mais j'oublie toujours mon vocabulaire pour tout ca.)

Marina · 12/09/2006 11:43

dozy person that I am. So I knit German style then thanks NQC!

SSSandy · 12/09/2006 11:43

Nanou1 · 12/09/2006 11:49

interesting read! my grandma showed me years ago and just remembered she is left handed!!!! you have lost me Ssandy?! . thanks for all this advice - will try and let you know

NotQuiteCockney · 12/09/2006 12:52

I think the French thing is because nanou is French? I think?

Marina, I only know about the German vs Continental thing because dear old Montse is (surprisingly!) quite opinionated on the subject.

I suspect German-style is better for KIP, at least, you stick your elbows/needles out less. (I always knit on a circular, anyway)

I have started work on my big blanket again, but must finish the sewing up, too, whoops.

Nanou1 · 12/09/2006 13:00

ok! and what is "knitting on a circular"? and i can hear someone out there saying "aawwwhh bless!" but i genuinely don't know!

bundle · 12/09/2006 13:02

sewing up has ground to a halt over here too

Nanou1 · 12/09/2006 13:04

oh no bundle! you need to finish, put a piccie on MN so that we admire your work and envy your skills - i will!!!!!

bundle · 12/09/2006 13:05

I know I have a good list of excuses:

party for both dd's last night
nursery committee meeting
now at work (they do notice if i knit!)

Nanou1 · 12/09/2006 13:16

hhhummm but they don't notice if you are on MN ... i hope

bundle · 12/09/2006 13:20

nah
and spookily am doing work while I MN...

Nanou1 · 12/09/2006 13:21

aren't we clever girls!!!! am writing cheques as we speak!

wartywarthog · 12/09/2006 14:10

nqc i've just started knitting non-circular things on circulars iyswim. much easier.

do you change patterns like sweaters to knit in the round so you don't have to sew up?

NotQuiteCockney · 12/09/2006 14:14

I'm still struggling with sweaters, frankly. I hate sewing up, but the armpits are tricky in the round.

Nanou1, circular needles look like this . There are two firm needles and a cord connecting them.

They are good for doing knitting in the round (hats etc), but also for flat knitting, particularly if you knit German-style, as they let you put a lot of the weight of the knitting on your left hand, so the right needle can move more freely. Because German-style knitting involves picking up the yarn with the right needle, rather than throwing it around the needle, you move your right needle around more. You really don't want extra weight on it, if you can avoid it.

kickassangel · 12/09/2006 17:09

knitting is definitely getting trendy, my local garden & leisure now stock equipment (yeah), so it MUST be cool.

(btw, been lurking for a while, just ogt excited about the new shop & had to but in!)

monkeytrousers · 12/09/2006 22:26

Well it's all go for tomorrow night. I'll let you know how it goes!

tamum · 14/09/2006 20:20

Well, monkeytrousers?? How was it?

monkeytrousers · 15/09/2006 15:24

It was good fun, though not everyone turned up; some hard core knitters some social knitters (and one smoker too)

Going to do the bistro on every third monday of the month and someones house every 1st monday.

Go girls!
