There is, it's called City Knitty and there's a Yahoo group with it. They meet in the City Cafe every Wednesday but there are always emails saying "I went to the City Cafe and waited an hour and nobody showed" kind of thing. Plus if I'm honest I would rather have a knitting group with people I had something in common with other than just knitting. I met up with some Rowanettes once and they were lovely but we had such different tastes in yarn and patterns, and you suddenly realise that if you don't even have that in common then it's all a bit awkward.

Was in Edinburgh for four years, knitting in public at that. Occasionally. Not very well. Actually, more fondling the yarns in john lewis in public. I used to live just off leith walk and had to cut through to get to uni.

(although this was circa 1997-2201 when knitting was not so cool.)

Breastfeeding in public anywhere - legal in Scotland

Knitting in public - have NO shame, ladies!

Knit away!

MIL does. I'm SOOOO jealous! DD1 holds her yarn.

Till she's old enough to knit herself.

She's right-handed, tho.

me & a few friends have a monthly (ish) group (some crochet, some knit) in London's cafe's, theatre bars and pubs (we do try for smoke free zones) and we attract a lot of attention

Marina · 12/09/2006 09:31

I am a public knitter and people do often comment (teenagers goggle and ask themselves loudly WTF she is doing as though I wasn't there, aaah, I love SE London, and older women tell me I am holding my yarn wrong). Had a really nice chat while frantically knitting squares on the train the other day, with a middle-aged guy who thought the whole idea of collective knitting sounded wonderful. He really was quite envious I think

the men dressed up in fishnets and basques at the recent Rocky Horror charity event at the Royal Court Theatre in Sloane Square enquired politely about technique, design and "could you knit me a codpiece?"

(have also crocheted on the piccadilly line, i find knitting a bit too cumbersome for the tube network)

Are you still knitting squares Marina? Is there another blanket going on I dont know about. My hands are itching I need to do something.

SSSandy · 12/09/2006 09:56

I get backache from knitting. I don't think I do it right, sort of sawing back and forth motion. Have to watch what I'm doing too, never managed the art of knitting and looking elsewhere. Can't imagine knitting in a pub, I need it all splayed out on a table in front of me including the pattern and my interpretation of what it probably means and a piece of paper where I'm crossing off how many times I've added or decreased.

Don't think I have what it takes basically.

Nanou1 · 12/09/2006 10:02

hi ladies. sorry marina i was to slow and did not have enough time for making those squares for you. very sorry! interested in going to a kintting - crochet club though.... don't know knitting well but would love to do a jumper for dd - they have great wools at bergere de france!

SSSandy · 12/09/2006 10:18

I've noticed that people here (in Germany) knit completely differently. They hold the wool differently and it looks a lot less energetic than what I used to do.

Marina · 12/09/2006 10:40

Liesel, Nanou, I think we will let the dust settle from this one, but yes, there was discussion of a new blanket very soon and I will definitely keep you posted when it is up and running .
ROFL at a knitted Rocky Horror Show. Whatever next

Marina · 12/09/2006 10:40

SSSandy, they are knitting like moi, continental style. Especially easy for left-handers I think.

Nanou1 · 12/09/2006 10:46

where are you from marina? moi ouest de londres . what is continental style? how do i know my left from my right then??!!! very confused beg knitter

Marina · 12/09/2006 10:59

sud-est de Londres!
Continental knitting is how French, German etc people are taught nanou - holding the yarn in the left hand. I believe it is the same in the USA. Typically, the English have their own style of knitting where you hold the yarn in your right hand to the right of the work . I am left handed so the continental style works best for me.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/09/2006 11:04

Marina, French people knit like English people do, actually (so do Belgians). Safer to call it "German" style. (Norwegians knit that way, too, probably the other Scandi types, too.)

NotQuiteCockney · 12/09/2006 11:06

Oh, I KIP all the time. Knitted next to a building site yesterday. I used to knit in DS1's school playground, quite a lot. And on planes, trains, etc, etc.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/09/2006 11:07

Oh, and Americans (and Canadians) traditionally knit English-style, but there is a movement towards German-style over there.

The knitting videos site (has anyone linked to that yet?) has videos of the basics in both German and English styles.

Nanou1 · 12/09/2006 11:07

i am SO glad you are saying that NotQuiteCockney... i do it the English way but am right handed. very funny trying to work out what was what!!!
