Anyone advise me on some sort of PVC fabric to paint onto?

I'm looking for something cheapish to paint a greeting onto...I know I could use sheets or canvass but I want this to be tough...something that I could hem and which would allow me to paint on with acrylic paint....I also want a smooth surface which is why I thought PVC or something?

When I say smooth surface I mean a little bit textured but not rough and absorbent like canvass which is harder to paint on.

why not use calico? You could hem it as required and then do a dilute pva wash over it. Let it dry and you have a smooth, not absorbant surface?
