We have a hearth rug we don't use anymore

Can I cut in two to make 2 bedside rugs? If so how do I finish the edges?
It's too bulky to machine and to whip it (is that the right term) would take ages I think.....is there a short cut with tape or something?
I wondered about sticking take on the back & cutting down the middle but worried that it would all unravel
