Do I have to do anything to a matchbox to make it safe for crafting?

I want to make dd a pet in a matchbox as seen on the Red Ted Art blog. Do I need to do anything to make it safe? Is it the matchbox that makes the flame or the stuff in the match?

Other than take the matches out?

Are they safety matches or traditional matches? Traditional matches just need a rough surface surface so a traditional matchbox will just have sandpaper type stuff on the side.

I'm not sure about safety matches. I think they need both match and box so the box on its own should be fine.

It mentions that you cover the matchbox in felt so the 'ignition' bit of the box woul likely to be covered.

I think with matches the flammable bit is the match tip and the heat created by the friction of dragging it along the box causes it to light.
