Knitting for beginners

I can crochet. I am, however, useless at knitting.

My last attempt only arose because DD went with me to the Hobbycraft show at the NEC last November, bought a hank of that wool that ruffles when knitted (when my back was turned) and then asked me to knit it into a scarf. Lucky for me, it came with a basic leaflet on how to knit the scarf.

I managed a scarf, extremely slowly, but I couldn't even cast off without asking for help . Casting on was nothing more than threading needle through and setting off. DD very nearly got a selection of rude words. Next time she can knit her own.

Can anyone put me out of my misery please and point me in the direction of a good beginner's guide? I feel crap compared to my MIL (but then, she can't crochet so I guess we're even ).

YouTube has pretty much everything you could need. But I would probably go to KnitFreedom, where Liat has her videos laid out in a logical order from cast on to 'bind off' (what Americans call casting off). She has some e-Books you can buy as well.

Knitting for Dummies is a great site but it's hard online to read it in order, i.e. starting with the cast off.

This Ladybird knitting book is also very good if you want to see instructions written down. I'm not sure if you would want to tackle some of the projects though - unless you know someone who lusts after a knitted tie

I'm a bit more visual so prefer to watch videos. I found the best site was knitting help

I can crochet and found continental knitting easier to do than "normal" knitting, because it's more similar to crochet.

YouTube is your friend for this, because it's not widely covered in books.
